this stuff is amazing, and you get plenty of it
First of all, this stuff is amazing, and you get plenty of it. Nothing that follows is a complaint, just a few warnings. This stuff is really messy. It's essentially motor oil, so cleaning it off your skin isn't pleasant, but cleaning it off of magnets is even harder. If you have it near magnets, it will find a way to get to them - the fluid will essentially aerosolize and re-form around the matnet, which is really cool to watch and really annoying to clean up. I suggest keeping it in a glass bottle, as small and thin as possible. The stuff will smear across the sides, so if you play with it too much you won't be able to see what's happening, but it's still neat.

Fun stuff
This stuff is pretty fun when you have some powerful magnets. It's a little expensive though. It stains anything and everything like crazy. You should buy some sort of pipette or dropper to transfer it from the bottle to a container. I highly recommend using latex or those types of gloves while handling it since it stains skin easily. Be careful too, it will leap out of the container around high power magnets. (Almost impossible to get off the magnet then) There are a lot of youtube videos of cool things you can do with this stuff. If you are just checking it out casually, I suggest getting a smaller amount first.

Great Stuff, but wish I knew...
Like most others, I first discovered this stuff through television commercials, and I had to have some like an addict, but I figured it was about a million dollars an ounce or so. Found it on line, etc. (see Hg explanation) after a while, and ordered it just because I wanted some, and I wanted some that was mixed correctly. You see, after the order arrived, I kept looking it up just to learn more about it, and I found out it's something that can be home brewed, preferrably by someone with a home lab and a reasonably high degree of technical lab skills and an insctinctual knowledge of higher math (because it's deceptive -- you read some web pages and think it's like powdered plaster and water, but that's WAY off, and a mistake can be messy, or a lesser experimenter than I might choose to just pitch failed mixes down the drain where they do not belong). Bottom line, when I found out how to mix it correctly, I'd wished I hadn't ordered it, because I know my own skill set would have led to a proper mix. It's still a pain in the neck to mix, though, so maybe ordering it pre-fab is just for you -- you decide. If I knew any attractive science teachers in Charlotte County, they'd get some (see Hg rating); also, if I was a dad with a home lab and kids, I'd be sure to have a separate mix and set of experiments ready to go, so at least my own kids would know that Oxford has it's competition (i.e., MIT, UF, et als.).

cool but messy
Lots of ferrofluid to play with. I thought this stuff would be a lot different than it is. Its basically motor oil, so if you put it in a glass container (which you absolutely should because if this stuff gets out it will stain any and everything) and it gets on the side it totally blacks out the view until its given time to settle back down. TIP: IF you get this messy stuff on your skin, table, counter, etc then just scrub hard with Dawn soap, its excellent for lifting oils.

Properties didnt match
Liquid does pretty much what its supposed to do, but upon measuring properties for a project, majority was out of the range set by manufacturer including density and viscosity. On the other hand i was nicely surprised by its magnetic propperties including liquids own magnetic field and its magnetic susceptibility.

Messy fun
This is a super fun thing for a kid who’s into science but beware it is a mess 😅 I have a gifted nine-year-old and this was a great Christmas gift for him but holy crap they are not kidding when they say it stains everything. I made him play with this outside in a tote and it’s still looks like a car exploded in front of my house. It’s almost like dirty motor oil that’s magnetic. I’m not saying all of that to try to talk anyone out of getting it because it really is neat stuff I’m just saying be prepared for quite the cleanup.

No
This product is not good. I don't know if it have an oil mixed with it or what but it messed up my little thing and now it isn't right.

Great stuff, fun to play with -- but very messy as well!
Very cool stuff! Be careful to use gloves and to cover your surface with plastic or lots of paper towels because this stuff is hard to clean up (it is made with nanoparticles). Also pay attention to how close your magnets are to the ferrofluid -- it will go flying through the air to coat whatever magnet gets too close. Fun experiment: I accidentally got this all over one of my more powerful magnets and decided to drop the magnet right into the ferrofluid petri dish. I was amazed how the magnet floated frictionlessly over the fluid.

I put half the bottle into a used glass jar for good visibility. It works really well with my collection of neodymium magnets. Nice clearly defined peaks and spikes. It is very dark fluid and staining, to the point that I don't want to bring the glass jar anywhere because sloshing of the ferrofluid will darken the walls of the jar at least for a good long while. For demos the best bet is to bring a clean clear glass jar, and pour the ferrofluid carefully after you arrive to a place where you can ensure minimum sloshing, for best visibility.

I think mine is defective because there’s no spikes even though I used a neodymium magnet for it. :(

I put in in a fishbowl of water and taped magnets to it. Fun times.
