Q: How often do you need go change the pads in this device?

I don't like the smell, so don't use the pads.

Q: Will this stay on overnight? I need one that won't auto switch off with half a tank of water left. Thanks

It stops when the water runs out. The water lasts longer on the low setting. I haven’t tried over night yet.

Q: This makes the surface underneath very hot? Is this normal

The base plate is supposed to heat up to evaporate the water, but I’ve found that by standing it on a flat hard surface (like a plastic tray) it allows the heat to escape as air can circulate beneath the unit. If it’s put on a carpet it will get hot.

Q: Does it have an internal light that stays always on when the machine is on, or the light can be switched off so it's dark at night?

There is a little green light that stays on while the machine is on. As far as I know, you can't switch that light off, but it is a very small light. I normally sleep in a pitch-black room and cannot sleep with a light on, but this light is so small that it doesn't bother me and I am able to sleep when this machine is on.
