Buy a pair (if you dare) before you buy three, four or more.
I bought two of these 4 channel 3 wire intercoms hoping to solve the problems I have with five 43-219, one 43-490, and three 34-218b OLD intercoms (all older 2 wire, 3 channel) knowing that they aren't compatible with the old ones. THE DIFFERENCE IS BARELY PERCEPTIBLE.I have an outlet tester and am an electronics technician that builds and repairs portable Wired and wireless bar code readers. The further I get fromthe transmitter, the more static I get until the signal is squelched / too weak. Also plugging in a near a UPS with surge protection, or a 4000 joule surge protector made things worse. I was only able to get two more outlets to work and they are 10 feet or less from each sub panel described below. The house is a 2300 square foot ranch style with 600 square feet upstairs and an attached 3 car garage between the main panel and the closest sub panel / breaker box. I tested the range by plugging in DIRECTLY to outlets as far from surge protectors as possible. The main intercom is in the master bedroom (opposite the 2nd sub panel) for my paraplegic wife. I suppose these would work better in mobile home or small footprint multistory home. FOR THE TECHNICALLY INCLINED, READ ON:The mains 220 split phase comes in to a SINGLE smart meter, and a big exterior service panel with master breakers (100 amp ?) that go to two interior breaker boxes / sub panels. I also have a grid tied 7 kW solar inverter I just replaced myself after 9 years running. I initially thought the problem was one sub panel was on phase A and the other on phase B since PAGE 12 OF THE MANUAL makes it sound like one half of the house is on one phase and the other half on the other phase. Also they refer to optimal (ludicrous?) scenario where the top half of one outlet is on one phase and the bottom half on the other which would probably cost twice as much to install and probably be more dangerous with DIY electricians getting bitten by 220. IN REALITY, BOTH INTERIOR SUB BREAKER BOXES HAVE BOTH A AND B PHASES. There are TWO COLUMNS and SEVERAL ROWS of knockouts for TWO smaller breakers (15 amp or so) or ONE larger (30 amp or more) that take the same space. The top ROW of left and right knockouts are on phase A, the second ROW (left and right columns) is phase B, alternating A then B and so on. 220 Volt ovens and dryers are fed from ganged breakers that use BOTH PHASES across KNOCKOUTS in the same column. I even have an offical X-10 phase coupler (3 caps and a few coils) that bridges the two phases. I just added three 0.1 uF 630 volt non-polarized capacitors (poor mans phase couplers) that when removed, make matters worse. One is at the mains entry, one each at the sub breaker boxes. They seem to help the old 2 wire intercoms work across phases ONLY IF both intercoms are VERY NEAR THE SAME BREAKER BOX. The 3 wire intercoms still have problems on THE SAME PHASE BUT DIFFERENT BREAKER BOXES because the signal probably has to go ALL THE WAY to the EXTERIOR MAINS MATER PANEL / METER. The only solution I can think of is to add one or two more circuits / breakers on phase A and run it up the wall, into the attic and put dedicated intercom outlets near the ceiling from one end of the house to the other. Or install a 4 wire intercom system. Or use the abandoned second phone line for a wired intercom. Or keep using the FRS radios, base stations and subsequent false alarms. Or void the warranty and FCC rules by cranking up the gain a few more dB... Janet's Husband : Brian Edwards

It Works!
I was concerned that this Intercom system would not work for me because I was planning to use it to communicate from our main house to a small guest house located in the back yard about 50' away. The first couple of plug outlets I tried in the main house did not work but I found 2 that eventually did work. The voice clarity of the system is much better than my old Novi intercom system and the lighted buttons are also a nice plus. I no longer have to turn a light on to see what button to push to talk. I just wished I could had placed the main house unit in a more convenient location...but it works!

I bought these to communicate from the house to my husband's "man cave" in the detached garage. They worked fine for the first six months and then wouldn't work anymore. Total waste of money.

Great sounds without background noise
I put one in my kitchen and the other in my shop. Both are on the same meter but they are about 100 feet apart. Great sounds without background noise. I'd buy them again, for sure. My only con would be that the volume button is a bit wonky since it is a horseshoe shape. Kind of odd to see the down volume side moving while I'm trying to turn it up. Seems to work fine, but just a bit odd.

I just needed a simple intercom to talk to my wife when she is in her office and I'm in mine. We have a common wall, so the power is fed on the same circuit, which enables this intercom to work.

Did not work-very disappointed.
Bought this to replace an older two wire set that quit working after some electrical updates. Was excited to find this set advertised to work on both phases of the electric panel. When I tried it, it didn't work any better than the old set. I sent it back and got a refund. To be honest I think the problem may have been a GFI type breaker in the electric panel on one of the circuits I wanted to use the intercom on.

it worked and works beautifully from one floor to the next
I checked on customers reviews and almost didn't buy it as it needed to be on two separate panels. Perhaps that one of the panels is a sub-panel, it worked and works beautifully from one floor to the next.
