Shooter's Bible Guide to Rifle Ballistics
R**N
Not the most mathematically technical, but very useful.
This book is informative for the average shooter and covers a wide variety of shooting scenarios, scope doping techniques, leading, following, and compesation but could be better if it focused more on technical aspects and calculations. I will say that for the price its a good buy, but the only three things that makes ANY marksman truly competent is PRACTICE, PRESSURE, and PERSEVERANCE. If you combine and apply those with the info from the book and some supplemental mathematical material, you should be able to learn to shoot well under most conditions.

Got it for my Kindle FIRE
I will also be able to use it on my IPAD//Android to Read it and then use other ballistic programs as from a kestrle to shoot at the long end from. Little could I think laying in the mud in 1968 that someday I would read the ballistics. Laying on my belly in the snow at 5000 ft high and shooting at 1500 meters now instead of yards I did back then. Back then it was all in my little black book and reading by star light.I would not go creepie crawlie on a moonlit night. I shot between a pair of eyeballs that were reflecting the moonlight. 75 yards at 2am VC time. Not every kill shot is at a million miles and thru a keyhole. with a hundred mile and hour wind from one mountain to the other.I did that one with a lowly M14thanksdray

Quite informative but like other comments
Quite informative but like other comments, there is no need for Mr. van Zwoll to show us all the pictures of his hunting adventures, along with pix of a lot of unnecessary rifles and cartridges. My bet is that most of us recognize rifles and cartridges and do not have to be shown what they look like. A better selection of pix could have been ammunition and cases that demonstrate firearms problems like excessive headspace, damaged chambers, etc

good but could have been great
This is a decent but somewhat superficial introductory book on the fundamentals of rifle ballistics, with good rule-of thumb tips for the average hunter. 3 starts for content, 4 for scope. As a hunter, firearms instructor, professional scientist and preferentially-visual learner I found that the book often lacks in clarity or misses opportunities to drive its point home more effectively. An additional formula here and there or a diagram instead of the tons of uninformative color pictures of dead game or Dr. Van Zwoll and his rifles would have worked better for me.One good picture is worth 1000 words they say. Here the pictures abound, but they are mainly fillers of -sometime- dubious importance. One example for all is chapter 24: the author spends way too many words describing a bullet trajectory, pointing out how usually published diagrams get it wrong etc, and then he misses the opportunity for showing a good one, therefore closing the issue forever... Also the part on the various accelerations applied to a spinning flying bullet could have been summarized quite effectively with a decent diagram and a set of vectors. The same can be said when he talks about MOI, canting, leading, wind correction etc. Too much talk, too little physics. I don't know. It's probably my fault, but it reads like any random article on the topics straight from Field & Stream, while I was expecting something else. After all Dr. Van Zwoll used to teach creative writing, not classical mechanics.

Fascinating
This is a must read if you're interested in any kind of shooting. The technical information is presented clearly enough that a layman can understand it on close reading and is peppered with interesting anecdotes from vanZwoll's long career. The information inside is priceless if you're interested in what happens when you pull the trigger and I have found it helpful in improving my shooting. One warning: significant passages are word for word from some of the author's other books, but the new information included in this book is well worth the price.

Understandable ballistics
Not quite what I had expected, however anyone looking into accuracy shooting should add this book to their library. Less ballistic theory than practical application with understandable explanations of what is happening. Aiming more at hunters than anyone else, van Zwoll does a good job of explaining bullet performance, wind, distance, and other variables affecting accuracy. You may very well learn something useful. This one has been read, noted, and added to my shooting bookshelf.

Very nicely written
I enjoyed the writing style and there is enough information in here to keep a novice riveted for the whole book. There are also a few interesting pointers for more experienced shooters.I believe there is enough good stuff in here to make it great value reading.

Great book
Lot of good information, A ton of history, maybe just a little more than necessary but a good read none the less. Tons of ballistic tables which is why i purchased it to begin with. Got reference book to have around.

I was expecting more
The book is not bad, but not to what I would expect can be written by someone as knowledgeable as Wayne Van Zwoll. The book is easy to read and written in magazine article style. It contains a lot of information, but diluted in a story telling fashion. I was expecting more focus on technical data and direct to the point chapter conclusions with clear statements. There are a lot of pictures, but most do not complement the text or give technical information. They are more suited for an album of hunting pictures.
