Tom Hanks' Feature Film Debut
Tom Hanks had done a couple of TV shows and the producers of "Splash" really wanted a bigger name actor in their movie. Daryl Hannah had made a favorable impression in a bit part in "Blade Runner" but the big "name" in the announced cast of Splash was John Candy, who was probably paid as much as the rest of the cast combined in the role of brother Freddy. It would have been very easy for the movie to become a broad farce with Candy and Eugene Levy in the love story of the man and the mermaid, but writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel found the right note between love story and comedy, and the cast pulls off both. The comedy varies between clever and slapstick, and seeing the film again 20 years later still made me laugh at parts. As expected, Candy and Levy do the heavy lifting in the comedy department, and they are both hilarious in their respective scenes. The whole movie wouldn't work at all, though, if we didn't believe in the central love story - and Hanks and Hannah make it work. Hannah is a mermaid apparently not unlike Disney's Ariel. She has a tail when wet, and legs when dry. Hanks is Allen Bauer, who has inherited his father's wholesale produce business along with brother Freddy. As a child Allen suddenly jumped into the water off Cape Cod, where the child mermaid rescues him until the adults can fetch him from the water. As an adult Allen has commitment issues and admits he doesn't love his girlfriend. After a friend's wedding he returns to Cape Cod for a little nostalgia. Another boating accident results in another mermaid rescue, but the "girl" runs away as Allen regains consciousness on shore. The mermaid fetches Allen's wallet from the ocean floor and follows a map to track Allen down in New York City. She climbs onto dry land at the statue of liberty - lacking a tail and clothes - and is taken into custody by the police. They call the guy who owns the wallet she's carrying. (The mermaid, of course, can't speak English...) So Allen and the Mermaid are united again, where the attraction is powerful and mutual. The Mermaid learns English watching television for an afternoon (this makes the rest of the movie easier!) and she decides to make her American name "Madison" while looking at a street sign for Madison Avenue. (Many Americans subsequently chose "Madison" for their daughters after this movie.) Allen only knows Madison is "foreign". Madison's time on land is limited. (For reasons that aren't exposed in the film.) Levy portrays a renegade pseudo-scientist who has been searching for a mermaid his entire career. When one swims past while he's diving at Cape Cod he is startled. Then he sees a newspaper photo of a nude girl at the Statue of Liberty that looks a lot like the mermaid... The plot isn't difficult to guess, but the performances are full of funny and touching flourishes that make you laugh and care about these characters. This isn't really a 5-star movie - but I couldn't choose 4 1/2. It's a pleasant way to spend some time with your own sweetie.

I saw this movie in the theater and have been a fan ever since, this is how I started to love mermaids ( even though I'm a guy,) and lead up to my love for pirates because of the stories for pirates and sailors who were lost to the sirans call. Wishing for a remake
The best mermaid movie ever made. Tom Hanks, as a young boy is vacationing with his parents. While riding on a boat he falls off into the water and is saved by a child mermaid. Decades later their paths cross again underwater and once again she saves him, but this time she gets her hands on his wallet and address. After swimming down to her underwater library of maps she looks up his home address and using her GPS senses...swims to find him. They both hook-up and the rest of the movie shows Hannah trying to keep her legs dry so her fish tail won't sprout. Scientists get wind of her existence anyway and the chase is on. I enjoyed watching Daryl swim and do her "dolphin-kick" underwater, and the love story between Daryl and Tom is very sweet and endearing. There are some funny scenes with John Candy which only reminds us what a talented comic he was. For a 1984 movie the underwater photography scenes are great. I really felt Daryl Hannah was a mermaid swimming underwater. The 1984 style clothing, and city scenes in the movie show their age, but the acting by Daryl and Tom is pristine. Tom Hanks had only made one other movie before he was cast in this film, but he did a good job convincing us he was in love with a mermaid. My only criticism is with Ron Howard's ending...mer-land is seen miles under the sea, but is little more than a few shimmers of light. If Ron Howard ever does a remake of "Splash," lets hope his budget is bigger.

but great for my seventh grader
I watched this movie with both of my kids (10 and 12) and thought it was about borderline for my fifth grader, but great for my seventh grader. It's funny and silly, with mermaids tied in so, even though one of my kids is a boy, he too enjoyed it. The story is heartwarming and ties one man meeting and falling in love with a mermaid he had a connection with when he was a small child. There is a lot of passionate kissing with some in-bed stuff, as well as basic swear words, but my kids could handle it and thought most of the borderline stuff as merely comical. The mermaid the main man falls in love with seems like a foreign airhead when she first comes, but learns English by watching six hours of TV, which Susette loved and Colin thought was unrealistic (classic pre-teen stuff). This is a great movie for families with older kids, but has some iffy content for youngsters.I watched this movie with both of my kids (10 and 12) and thought it was about borderline for my fifth grader, but great for my seventh grader. I don't want to go over the top in reiterating what a great piece of cinema this is from a writing, casting and direction point of view. Many other reviewers have summed up what makes this film special, the sweet romance, the gentle humour and great writing and direction. Disney's first foray into grownup films (bare bums and snogging) is still enjoyable despite it taking its time to get to grown up Madison. What I do want to point out is that despite it being a film older than myself and a bog standard DVD edition it is really quite a good transfer and quality copy, admittedly it's not frame by frame restored bluray HD resolution, but it's not fizzing and fuzzing like some other cheap transfers which can evoke migraines. This is worth the purchase alone as so many treasured films of mine have been rendered barely watchable through a bodged transfer from VHS to DVD by the studios rushing out DVD titles from their libraries. This DVD is well worth its outstandingly cheap price (at the time of purchase), as it couples a really good DVD quality image with a fantastic film that stands the test of time even with its 80s technology and fashion!
