Review - It's Not What You Think
Overall, Bethke's message resonated with me. I found myself challenged, convicted, refreshed, and alive after reading it. As a theology major, so many of the world-changing things I've learned in my studies were covered here in a way someone who isn't a bible major can understand. That's huge for me, because now I have a resource I can share with friends to show them Jesus in a deeper, more meaningful way.I was tempted to say this book seemed scattered, and misguided, until I put it down. Jeff had a lot to say about *everything.* And that's good. This book presents itself as more of a conversation starter than a closing remark, and I think he intended it to be that way. If at all possible, read it with a friend or small group, because you'll all have plenty to talk about. Some of the other street team members and I hosted a small discussion group broadcast as we read through it, and I can't even tell you how amazing it was. Each page hit us in different ways, and we all had epiphanies and take-aways that differed from each other. No one was left thinking "I already knew that."He leaves no rock unturned, unleashing paradigm after paradigm, blending rich modern scholarship with deep pastoral concern for the Church. That being said, this is a hard hitting title, and I wouldn't recommend trying to read it quickly. I'm a fairly quick reader, and I had to pace myself over two months so I could digest the content. But it's not a dense read. In fact, Jeff is a phenomenal wordsmith, and can make difficult theological concepts easy to digest. But this book is so loaded with so many discussions on different topics, you have to slowly move through each section, making sure you don't miss out on something rich. I'd definitely recommend having a highlighter present.

Excellent book to read or gift!
My teenage daughter loved this book and highlighted things all throughout the book. When she finished reading it she gave it to me and told me I should read it. I'm about half way through the book and have been highlighting things myself. Jefferson Bethke speaks to this young adult generation from a heart of humility having walked an imperfect challenging path in life himself. He has a sincere heart to help others know the true Jesus in a relational way rather than a traditional 'religious' way. He wants to help people change their lives from the inside out. He is not afraid to approach the Bible with new believers taking on challenging stories and topics and opening them up in a way that points to Jesus' love for every individual. He's refreshingly real and humble and making an impact for Jesus. This book is excellent for anyone questioning who Jesus really is, or believers who want to know how they can communicate with the younger generation about who Jesus really is.

I Love A Book That Inspires Me To Write
I choose 5 stars because I enjoy an easy read from time-to-time. Not a study but simply an enjoyable read. From beginning to end I would highlight certain parts and make a note with the word "quote" as to post it at a later date as a quote. I also enjoyed that Jefferson Bethke’s words inspired me to write. I can’t say I disliked anything but I enjoyed the fact that he shows a Jesus I did not know. He opens up the scripture in ways I did not see. He allowed me to get a glimpse into Jewish culture without flying to Israel.Jefferson, through his words paints a picture that of being a man that is humble and also a man of confession. Not hiding behind a new nature but embracing it with a thorough memory of his past. One last thing I’d like to mention. There has been times in my life that God seems to convey to me that the book I am reading is the book He had intended for me to read. Almost as if He went to His own book shelf and handed over to me my next read as to say: “You’ve gotta read this one!” Jefferson’s “It’s Not What You Think” was just such a book. Thanks for writing it Jefferson. I’d recommend it to all but in particular those who know an apologetic book, a theology book and care to know a more tender look at God. Grab this book and sit at God’s table and read. He’s there waiting to discuss it with you.YOU ARE LOVED.

Love this book!
GOD has given great inspiration and insight to this young man. Great perspective is seen and understood. Jefferson makes a good point, JESUS is the most creative, dynamic and alluring teacher...yet we'd prefer to to give someone the Roman road or 4 spiritual laws. Water does not just cover the sea, it is the sea. Such is my relationship supposed to be with GOD. I want to "know" GOD intimately. To be so intertwined that we become one, just like a married couple. Take away my water and I, the sea, will no longer exist. I could go on and on about what I got out of this book, but I would rather sincerely encourage others to read and receive their own inspiration and a different perspective of GOD through reading.

Another great book from an authentic writer
The reason Jefferson Bethke is a great writer is because he is authentic and has a skill for connecting with the truly human part of people. He's not a professional theologian or a pastor, yet he is very good at examining our common thoughts and thinking about God and knowing Him. To his credit, Bethke is steeped in Jesus, which makes this book refreshing.I gave this book four stars for two reasons: (1) Because it didn't feel as organized as the last book. There didn't seem to be as much of a common thread or theme tying the chapters together (there was a little more of this toward the end). (2) It wasn't as good as his last book. I know that's a little unfair, and each book should be judged on it's own, but I sort of felt like this book was a little less personal than his last one—and as I mentioned above, I really think that's where he thrives. If he did an entire book just answering the questions young people have about Christianity and following Jesus, it would be a big hit. That said, in general, read this book. You'll benefit from Jefferson's insights into culture and Jesus.

Great for Christians
For those who are Christians and are looking for a book that is deep and simple to read, I'd always recommend Bethke's books. He writes for people with such a talent. And we can learn loads of things about how Jesus wants us to be his people.

A book which really puts the Bible in perspective
Jefferson Bethke has written another great book following his first book on why a relationship with Jesus is way better than an empty religion based on rules and regulations.Starting from the beginning of creation, Jeff essentially takes readers on a journey through the Bible and how the essence of what God is trying to communicate to us is much much more than simply going to heaven one day (amazing in itself). There is an amazing relationship to be shared with an amazing God right here, right now!I think that one of the stand out parts of the book is the emphasis that Jeff places on humanity's relationship with God. Instead of starting with the sin of humankind (a very important truth all the same), Jeff starts the journey by looking at how, before the Fall, humans were in a perfect and uninterrupted relationship with God. Creation worked in perfect harmony: shalom. It is that relationship which sets the dynamic for the rest of the Bible, the whole time God is constantly seeking out an undeserving world that constantly lets Him down in order to get back to that perfect relationship that we once had. It's just really refreshing to see someone start from Genesis 1, not Genesis 3!If a book that really makes you think about your relationship with God in the here and now sounds interesting to you, then read this book! Indeed, if everything you have just read sounds confusing, then still read this book - my review certainly cannot do it justice.
