I love this book! I just started oil painting in September and realized God gave me a talent! Not knowing the 'how to' of oil painting I ordered this book hoping to learn about my newly found joy! I was not disappointed. Right from the first pages, learning about the authors, understanding the joy of having a 'studio' place to paint (for me its my class-a get away), and believing the same as the authors regarding bringing God glory in my work! What a great book. It's easy to understand & clear! ...it is a God send!

I like these books because I am learning to paint. They are helpful.

This book has tons of useful information for any artist who paints with oils.

I purchased this instructional book and DVD based on the ability to preview the book on Amazon. The book proved to be as expected, with lots of good basic information and illustrations, though the author's focus was on water mixable oils, and didn't cover traditional oil mediums in any detail (my current area of interest). It would have been helpful to have had this point more prominently advertised.I was particularly eager to view the included DVD (a factor in my purchase of this book over others), but found the production quality lacking. Specifically, the volume levels for the two hosts was substantially different, and the demonstrators might have benefited from having a producer/director to do additional cuts to remove some of the woodenness any of us might experience in front of a camera.I gave the product three stars instead of four because of the above two points, but I nevertheless found the information at an "absolute beginner" level to be helpful and a useful addition to my collection.

I checked this book out at the library first, so I knew I would love it. Very simply laid out and teaches painting in layers. NO prying eyes or feeling intimidated by a large art class. I can study on my own at my own pace.

An excellent resource for the novice. Great instruction on the basics...materials, equipment, techniques, exercises. Provides a sound education for the beginning oil painter.

Interesting book, with cd. Lots of helpful hints

Like many people I 'dabble' in art. Which is to say I do art when time and inclination permits. I always wanted to try oils though and this is an excellent introduction that explains everything you need to know, Unlike many art books it isn't focussed on a self indulgent showcase for the authors work, but instead shows all the skills and techniques to start working with oils as well as a broader background to art in general.I own a few art books, but without doubt this is one of the best books I have purchased. It is clear, concise and takes the reader through everything they need to know to start working with oils. It is well written, has many illustrations, tips and guidance and is a great choice for those wanting to explore painting with oils. Recommended..

Fantastic reference manual for me. There was even a tutorial DVD with it!!!Wonderful.

I am very impressed with this book - very approachable and interesting. I only got it yesterday and it already helped me to paint a couple of landscapes. I am a complete beginner and was very impressed by how easy it can be to paint.Highly recommended!
