Struggled to rate- youthful safe gentle 'get your Witch on' for beginners but lacks depth and focus
If you are or have a tween, teen or YA who has recently shown an interest in the resurgence of Wicca and/or neo-pagan belief systems that embrace witchcraft as has become a trend especially on Instagram and entertainment shows then this would make a really sweet gift that includes a lot of natural cleaning and beauty, and picking herbs and making pickles and jams with meaning alongside bitesize gentle introductions to some nice alternative spiritual practices including some very basic witchcraft- that is a lot of symbolism and sympathetic magic- build an altar, pick some herbs and pretty stones to bring me happiness, money, a job, nice hair kind of thing. If you have been interested in alternative spirituality for some years but not sure about how to embrace it, this could also be a nice primer for older people too, who may not want a 'serious' book, Nor something gloomy coloured and covered in pentacles, just something with I CAN do this now, I've got the stuff in my fridge/plant pot/cupboard RIGHT now kind of approach. Kind of for people who want the kind of earthy day to day behaviours that Sandra Bullock and her aunties would've done in Practical Magic before all the dark & serious love spells and reanimation of the creepy bad guy stuff came along and without the ability to light a candle by blowing on it.However If you have any 'time' in the craft (and likely over the age of 30) then I would find some thing else to consider buying. Like me, you may find yourself flashing back to the plethora of this type of usually Llewellyn published books that pounded the market in the late 90s-mid 00s. Those who loved those books will remember SilverRavenwolf et al fondly. The more cynical amongst may recall the terms 'fluffy' or 'white lighters'. Those in the middle ground will probably just remember when they were starting out and move on.It's a bit strange though the author is well connected in the West Coast community counting Starhawk and ZBudapest amongst her kin, two names I certainly don't associate with this kind of book. This book isn't nothing new, it brings together certain trends in social media with neopaganism- it's kind of a mashup of a Natural home and a beauty recipe book with a standard 'embrace your witchiness' kind of book (th little actual craft) dressed up with a dash of Kate West Witches Kitchen/Home. I'm not convinced though that this is better due to the jumpy bitesize approach to the subject matter, but will suit those who don't have the time/attention span to read a more traditionally organised book with paragraphs. If you have been in the Craft for some time you don't need this, you WILL have a/many books already like this and if you're curious about the cleaning recipes there's Pinterest. If you are a relative newcomer or someone so far dabbling in alternative spirituality and lifestyles and want to 'get your Witch on" in your daily life, maybe embrace some greener ethics and use sympathetic magic around the home, personally it's ok as a very basic starter, but there's better out there even the very thin Magical Household by Scott Cunningham has more depth giving purpose to a lot of superstitions and practices. If you are trying to encourage a newly interested young person and don't want to loan out the good stuff just yet, this isn't bad, there's nothing the reader could really mess up energetically with (she gives warnings about calling on deities and beings) there's no casting, energy or circle work, just some self care, pretty natural beauty crafts and home products getting into the thrum of habits and some basic sympathetic magic much in line with that we know has been part of common folklore for years anyway. The literacy level required is youthful and mainstream, it's not a 'serious' tome nor academic, it's like a a collection of bitesize hints and tips and recipes that will be exciting to do something earthy and 'witchy' and hopefully lead to further curiosity and reading.I don't mean to disrespect the author, she's got excellent credentials, it's a fun and happy book and certainly hits the mark with its target audience, she's well connected in the American scene and obviously knows her stuff but it's not unfair to point out that this is obviously aimed at a certain market. Those long established in the craft aren't really the audience, those dipping toes OR relative newbies wanting to bring daily practice or to 'witch' up their regular life without it looking like they've gone all goth will find some interesting ideas. Hence the 4 stars, with caution for established witches.
