This was my first Sophie Jordan book, and I am going to try another. I'm still not sure if I'm adding her to my list yet.I liked the plot of this, very wonderful and emotional. The characters were wonderful, I do agree that Jane should have more backbone, but it all built up inside her and exploded in front of her selfish, superficial sister.Seth was very bitter and cold, from a past experience which made him feel very icy inside and unable to trust others. Toward the end he became annoying in his distant attitude, and I wanted to punch him and tell him to stop denying it already. It's irritating when the long-awaited love confession is on one of the last few pages. The one thing that bothered me the most, because I'm a huge grammar/spelling dork, was the bad editing. There were many, many, many errors. Example: "Her frowned, saying nothing." All you need to do is drop the "r" from what obviously was supposed to be "He." And there are other things like that all over. I would expect it from an old crappy Bertrice Small book(one of the worst "romance" authors), but this was from-what?-2008, and editors are still screwing up.I am keeping this book, because I would read it again.

Book wrapped up too quickly
This is a great book, and I was captivated from the very first chapter. However, the ending was awful. Yeah, they lived happily-ever-after, as always, but one more chapter would have gone a long way to making the book 5 stars. As another reviewer said, it was a huge climax, the reader anticipating what was going to come next, only to have it just die.The two 'evil' characters that were depicted in this story, both claimed they would make the Jane and Seth pay for what they've done... but nothing ever happened. Three-quarters a way through the book, it kind of felt like the author was told to finish the rest of the book in an hour so she didn't have the time to wrap everything up.I read the romance novels for the plot-lines and I have found nothing that can beat The Black Knight by Connie Mason when it comes to plots. I have read that book more times than I can remember because it was just so amazingly written. This book, however, I will never read again. I couldn't put it down, but at the end I was very disappointed, to say the least.

A really nice romance book!
*** Back cover synopsis ***Anything can happen after dark . . .Tired of being treated like a servant by her own family, Lady Jane Guthrie finally has a chance to escape . . . at least for one night. Attired in a daring gown, she arrives at a scandalous courtesans' masquerade ball looking forward to her few hours of freedom. But when she sees Seth Rutledge, her skin begins to tingle with anticipation. Many years ago, Seth broke her heart by falling for her beautiful, title-hungry sister. But now here he is, right in front of her, offering her his lips . . .Embittered by war, Seth returns home to inherit the title that would have once won him the woman of his dreams. Though duty demands he wed, he's convinced passion no longer has a place in his life . . . until a masked siren sets his heart aflame. Desperate to find her again, he has no idea it's his childhood friend Jane--and that after one night together their lives will never be the same.*** Personal opinion ***This was a definite tear-jerky book for me and it was really THAT good that I had to cry in a couple of the chapters. The way how Seth treated Jane was just too cruel and Jane has my sympathy throughout the whole story. Her character is definitely described as a tragedy-heroine (although, probably not that dramatic but oh well). Some of the harsh dealings of Seth towards Jane were really heart-wrenching, yet Jane never gave up loving him, and I thought it was just the most beautiful thing there is. At the end, I was really glad Jane took that drastic step from Seth to make him realize his love for her. Definitely a satisfying ending. The author did a great job on this book!My only complain about the book is that the scene where Seth confesses his love to Jane was done in a little bit of a haste. I mean, I felt like Jane definitely deserved more since she suffered so much throughout the whole book. She could've at least made Seth suffer a little before going back into his arms.

Very enjoyable
When a book can make you go through the full range of emotions, tears of sorrow and happiness, laughter, you know the author has done a great job of bringing you into the story. Thank you.

Happy escape into happy endings
Loved the characters & loved to dislike real weak wicked characters. Enjoyed reading & rooting for Love to conquer the young lovers into happy families.

One of the better ones out this year..
I really liked this book because it was such a nice love story with lots of emotion. As I got into the book, I actually physically ached for the characters and their turmoil...love it when a book can do that to me. Didn't love the ending so much but overall worth buying and reading...very well written. Fast read...couldn't put it down.

Sweet, unassuming Regency romance
Widowed Lady Jane Guthrie is fed up with her family treating her like a servant and longs to have just one night of freedom. With the help of her friends, she dons the most daring gown and manages to sneak to a scandalous courtesans' masquerade ball. While there, she comes face to face with Seth Rutledge, her childhood friend and the man who broke her heart all those years ago by choosing her beautiful, title-hungry sister over her. But now, with a mask to conceal her identity, Seth definitely wants only Jane.Just back from war and new to a title he never expected to inherit, Seth is entranced by the masked beauty before him and vows to reveal all her secrets. Determined to marry for duty alone, passion is something that Seth has no place for in his life. But he can't help but want the mysterious woman before him, possibly for more than just one night. But what will happen when he realises that his masked love is none other than his childhood friend Jane? This was an unassuming and invariably sweet Regency romance and another winner from Sophie Jordan. The plot of two childhood friends that come together and re-learn what they feel for each other captured me and I was eager to keep reading to find out what happened to the characters. Jane is uncomplicated and fresh - someone you might not necessarily relate to but certainly will root for. Seth too was an interesting hero. Slightly brooding and dark but with the tender streak I like in a leading male. I have to admit that I didn't really understand his motivations at times but that didn't really spoil the story for me.The conflict in the story wasn't clichéd but I did feel that it was a little drawn out towards the end and I was wondering how many more obstacles would be thrown at Jane and Seth before they could reach their happy ever after. I'll also admit to feeling slightly let down by the speed of Seth's changing feelings at the end of the book, but as everything concluded the way it should then I really shouldn't complain. If you're looking for a light, sweet and romantic Regency story then you really can't go wrong with this book. 4 stars.

Enjoyable read..editing problem
Consistent with the other books in the series. There was a major problem with change of scene editing. Generally there is a double tab between changes in scene. These seem to have disappeared and the scenes bleed together paragraph to paragraph. It was a little confusing the first time it happened (about 1/4 into the book). Once I realised I paused between scenes but it made the experience a bit clunky.
