It's hard to describe the Finnish treat salmiakki. Salty licorice doesn't quite do it justice. It's flavorful black licorice with ammonium chloride (not table salt, which is sodium chloride). Yes, it's salty, but it's also pungent and savory and suggestive of tannins. Each little chew in these boxes of classic salmiakki diamonds is mouth-watering and satisfying at the same time. This may not be a candy for everyone's list, but it's deliciously complex. If you don't like black licorice, you probably won't like this. But you do like chewy black licorice and you also like other powerful flavors such as coffee, strong tea, red wine, dark rye bread, or blackstrap molasses, you might find your new favorite treat in these little boxes. Without these wonderful little drops I'd be consuming bags upon bags of licorice. The richness of these little drops appease my craving for licorice. They always arrive on time if not earlier. They're always fresh and packaged well.Please note, those unfamiliar with European licorice, this particular licorice doesn't taste like Twizzlers. It has salmiak added to give it a slightly salty taste. Its just enough to balance the sweet with the salty. There are other types of Finnish licorice that arent salty. The sweet ones are also very good.Finnish licorice is just better than most.This one is also at a very good price.

Hard to find, good taste

For context, i am NOT a fan of black licorice by any means, hated it totally before these. But these are a strange exception. The saltiness kind of counteracts the licorice taste (which is very light in the first place). Surprisingly good, and kinda addictive.

This is exactly like I remembered when growing up in NYC. The taste is spot on, the pieces are a little softer than I remember but no big deal, just let them melt in your mouth!

If you like good, licorice, don’t buy these they taste terrible. It’s not licorice it taste like soap.

A very different taste experience. I got this for a friend who had been looking for Finnish salted licorice. She shared a box back to me to try. Not ever having had it, I didn't know what to expect. Not totally unpleasant. I wish the pastilles were softer.

Exactly what I remember as a kid "sneaking my Dad's candy".
