City Beneath The Sea (Region 2) : desertcart.co.uk Review: Fantastic fantasy adventure - always been one of my favourites - Always loved this film when I was a kid and it doesn't disappoint. So glad to find it on DVD. Would have preferred full widescreen but this 16:9 format still looks impressive - particularly the undersea shots of Pacifica. Review: Moderately enjoyable 50s Caribbean sea adventure - Two salvage divers (Robert Ryan, Anthony Quinn) arrive in Jamaica at the behest of an insurance company who hope to locate a ship that was lost in a hurricane ..... and carrying over a million dollars in gold! What, at first, seems a simple salvage job turns into a tale of greed, double crosses, romance and voodoo. Although directed by Budd Boetticher, don't expect much. This isn't one of his complex, layered westerns with Randolph Scott but an uncomplicated exotic Saturday matinee Technicolor adventure. It's the kind of movie where you can only pay half attention to and still get everything that's going on. Ryan seems adrift here, he's the kind of actor who needs a part with some teeth. As a generic action hero, he seems uncomfortable and it shows. Quinn fares better as Ryan's hard drinking, two fisted, skirt chasing partner. For a film shot on the Universal backlot, the Universal art department does a decent job of turning it into the Caribbean. With Mala Powers and Suzan Ball as the romantic interest of Ryan and Quinn respectively. Also with Woody Strode, George Mathews, Karel Stepanek, Hilo Hattie and Lalo Rios. The Koch Media DVD via Germany is a nice transfer with muted colors. Soundtrack is in both English or German. The German subtitles are easily disabled.

There Be Some Dodgy Fashions Beneath Them There Waves
If you love 70's Sci-Fi then this is one film you wont want to miss.Brought to us by Irwin Allen, king of the disaster movies and 60's Sci-Fi TV shows (Lost In Space,Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea and Time Tunnel among them). The plot is as daft as a brush to be honest, someone is planning to steal gold from an underwater city, that may just be about to be hit by an asteroid, there you go thats it.But you dont care because the whole thing is so much fun, when looked back at from todays perspective. The mad set designs, gaudy colours, obvious effects, terrible clothes and insane ideas work for the film rather than against it.It boasts a pretty good cast as well for the day,Stuart Whitman makes a good square jawed hero, and Robert Wagner chews up the scenery like it going out of style. There are no tongue in cheek performances, every member of the cast plays it dead straight and gives it the full beans, which is one of the main factors why it still works. It may have been no more than a lowly TV movie, but they treat it like it was a big budget studio film. Its a fun movie that brings back a time when ropey effects and way out stories were the order of the day,and makes you smile in the process, and,in my oppinion,it should be celebrated for that reason alone,if no other.

Excellent science fiction film produced by Irwin Allen. Some people live an underwater city called Pacifica. They find that they must defend their city against hostile forces.
