Works Great on Our Very Rusty Well Water
We have a MAJOR problem with iron (hence rust) in our well water. I used this as directed in adding a cup to ½ gallon of water, then pouring it into the brine tank. (I was almost out of salt at the time, so I poured it directly into the standing water which was clearly visible at the time. Could I not see the water, I would have poured it into the standpipe to ensure maximum effectiveness.) The instructions called for a manual recharge of the softener after adding this initial ½ gallon of solution, which I did. However, I could still smell a trace amount of Rust Out in the water after the recharge cycle was completed. The odor did not go away until a second recharge cycle was performed. You may or may not experience the same necessity of a second recharge -- but, just in case you do, you might want to take the possibility of going the extra time without using your water (if bypassing the softener in the meantime isn't an option, as it is not for us). In adding more salt to our brine tank, I have also layered the ¼ cup of Rust Out atop each 40 pounds of salt added. I spread it somewhat evenly over the top of the salt, hoping for a more or less even integration of the chemical into the brine as it settles and dissolves. (I should note that I am using this in conjunction with a resin bed cleaner ( ResCare RK64N All-Purpose Water Softener Cleaner Liquid Refill, 64 Ounce ) and plain solar salt.) It's been about a week since I first started using this and it has made a marked improvement in our water. It tastes better and there is, as of yet, no visible rust discoloration in our shower or toilet bowls. After years of reluctantly accepting rust into our lives, I'm calling this a success. Rust Out will be a regular additive to our brine tank. A word of CAUTION: this is a fine powder and goes airborne EASILY. The SAME goes for Iron Out, a similar product. (They even smell the same.) I don't like breathing it in. I'm not sure of the efficacy (let alone necessity) of using this to remove rust from one's lungs, but I'm not game to find out. To minimize the dust cloud, when pouring, I pour the shortest possible distance and DON'T SHAKE it. Hold the bottle as close to the measuring cup and the measuring cup as close to what you're pouring it onto or into as possible. (I even take a deep breath and hold it while doing this.) When you're done, cover everything (bottle, brine tank) to keep the dust down.

Works great!
Gets the job done! Definitely helps get the rust out. Fairly hard water where I live and rust staining was showing up. Followed the easy instructions, and the amount of rust that came out after treatment was amazing! Had to run the water for quite some time to get back to clear, but since then no noticable rust stains from the water! Good value, sure beats trying to scrub all the rust away weekly!

It works!
This product worked well. The only drawback was, we had to regenerate the system 3 times & run the water by tap for quite sometime to be rid of the odor.

Would buy again
I live on well water and it has a lot of iron in the water. Even with a filter system I need a good product to clean the toilet. This is a great product for removing the iron.

This product really works.
Wow this product really works! Put in toilet tank overnight and the inside of the toilet tank went from black to almost white overnight. I was very impressed. I actually bought it for my water softner to clean out iron buildup. Can't tell how it works in water softner, but it sure cleaned the toilet tank overnight.

Great to revive resin beads in water softner and clean rusty water lines...
Love this stuff. I pour this in my salt brine tank, layered between the salt, when I'm filling the tank with new salt. I use about 1/2 of the container with 4 bags of salt which lasts me almost six months. So this container will keep me in soft water for a year. I started using this about a year ago when I noticed that my water wasn't as soft as it used to be.... even right after a regeneration cycle. I guess my resin beads were getting a rust build up on them and this stuff must have removed it because my water is unbelivibly softer now. I never pulled the head from my regeneration tank to verify this, but the results are proof enough for me. A word of caution... Rust Out stinks and will burn your nose when you are adding it to your tank, so ce careful not to breathe the dust. And according to the manufacture, during the final rinse cycle of your tank, all of this chemical is flushed from your tank so water should be safe to drink soon after. But I don't drink the water until a load or two of clothes have been washed, or maybe a few showers have been taken... just to be on the safe side. And one more note, if your water lines and resing beads are in pretty bad shape (rusty), you may want to change your regeneration cycle to once every 2-3 days for a week or two. Once the rust build up has been removed you can set the regeneration to what you are used to.
