Hi Stephanie, Great question! Our research lead us to believe that folinic acid is the best alternative to folate, particularly as we are formulating liquid vitamins. Folate and 5-MTHF are not stable in liquid formulas. Since folinic acid is more easily metabolized and more natural than folic acid, we opted to use it in our vitamins. The human body cannot synthesize folate (vitamin B9), an essential micronutrient. As such, it is necessary to supplement to maintain healthy folate levels, which is why it is so common to find folate-fortified foods (typically folic acid added to flour, breads and breakfast cereals). There are several different compounds that fall under the umbrella term of folate, each with variation in bioavailability and metabolic processes. Here is a brief overview of each type: FOLIC ACID -Synthetic, oxidized form of folate; widely used in fortified foods and supplements -High degree of stability and absorption rate of 85-95% (compared to 50% of folate from dietary sources). -However, it needs to be reduced intracellularly in order to become metabolically active. The conversion process is complex and dependent on several enzymes including in addition to an adequate supply of nutrients The body is slow to metabolize folic acid, meaning that unmetabolized folic acid can build up in the bloodstream, potentially leading to adverse health effects. FOLINIC ACID -Occurs naturally in foods; more metabolically & biologically active -An immediate precursor to 5,10-MTHF, which is rapidly metabolized to produce active folate (5-MTHF). -Supplementation with Folinic acid alleviates the need for the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and bypasses reduction steps that are required with folic acid supplementation -Bioavailability of Folinic acid appears to be high, with human absorption studies showing a bioavailability of 92% 5-MTHF or Methylated Folate -The biologically active form of folate and the major circulating form of folate in the body. -5-MTHF is also the predominant type of folate found in food. -Able to cross the blood-brain barrier. -Individuals with the MTHFR gene, who have reduced capacity for producing 5-MTHF, may benefit from 5-MTHF supplementation over folic acid supplementation If you are aware that you carry the MTHFR gene mutation, we recommend that you speak with your physician and healthcare professional for their advice on what is best for you.
