I have had my tracheostomy using a cannula setup (not a permanent) for over 16 months due to softening of the trachea wall and growth of a benign mass near the vocal cords. This is nothing fancy but works well to humidify inspired air to keep the tracheal secretions loose. They usually last 24 hours unless you have profuse secretions. The worst thing that happens is that the secretion get into the chamber and block the pores of the humidifier. I have coughed a plugged filter out of the holder and more than 3 feet away. I will keep using as necessary unless I have to have a permanent tracheostomy.

Works fine as a HME device, fits well on the trach. But the cotton part is definitely thinner than some of the other ones. Expect to replace it a few times a day depending on how much secretion you have. But it does help to warm and moisturize the air so that your secretion doesn't dry up in your trach.
