The Encyclopedia of the Dog

Bow-Wow Wonderful
One of the best canine reference books I have ever read. The photography is beautiful and unlike many such books, we are treated to photos of both adult and puppy of the breed. Book also contains an excellent health section on the anatomy of the dog and provides an outstanding aid in making preliminary home diagnoses which provide useful information for the vet. Photos also show the dogs in various habitats. Book is a delight for dog lovers of all ages. I purchased the book for my wife who is trying to decide on the best choice for her next dog and our granddaughters love it as well. We usually wind up getting mutts, and most often from the ASPCA, but this book tells us what characteristics we can expect in mixed breeds. Outstanding book.

Grreat for the inquisitive mind
This book is a quick guide to all the dog breeds in the world. My husband and I refer to it frequently; for example, if we see a breed we're unfamiliar with we'll look it up in this book. Or if we meet a dog that is behaving in a certain way, we go to this book to learn what the typical behavior for that breed is. The photographs are straightforward and not overly styled. Yet the photographs are so professional that you really don't need a different book that may have lot's of "beauty" shots in it. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs in general, and who is interested in learning a little bit about all the specific breeds. The last comment I'd like to add is that this book is really quite beautiful for a reference book. It's worth the price, and if you are a dog lover it will be in your library forever.

I love this book
This is the perfect 'coffee table book'. Any dog lover will have a hard time putting this book down.....and you'll find yourself wanting a dog (or another dog) when you do. The images are stunning and the information about each breed is detailed. It's the perfect book to have in your home - it can be appreciated and enjoyed by both old and young.

Another great resource, not as in-depth as the World Atlas of Dog Breeds by Dominique DeVito, but one to have available in your library for some really great looking photographs of breeds.

The book is great
Unfortunately the copy of the book was in poor condition and I returned it for full credit, however, the book was resent back to me. I have no idea of why, and have absolute no use for it since it was purchased as a gift.

great for breed variety but text less informative
This is overall an excellent book which includes about 500 different breeds, far more than other similar books I have seen. However, the texts are brief and not very informative. The symbols (which indicate a breed's temperament, grooming needs) are ambiguous at best. e.g. When there is no symbol indicating whether a dog needs room to run, does it mean the dog has no such need? Basically, one can get an idea of the size, look, origin, and original purpose of a breed from this book. For any information beyond a one-sentence summary, one must find another source.

Excellent pictures and content
I am very pleased with the content and the pictures. It does cover a number of the majority of breeds that are out there today. As far as I am aware there is no book that covers all of the breeds including recent "designer dogs" which is why I have more than one book. This is one of my two go-to favorites now.

The New Encyclopedia of the Dog
We have kept a number of dog encycolpedias over the years, as well as a variety of breed specific titles, training or grooming guides. Looking for a new title on Amazon is a little frustrating, you cant flick through the pictures or browse the text to compare one option with another, it therefore was with a little pot luck we selected this title from the half a dozen or so choices. This is large book covering the main KC breeds, but also a number of less common breeds from around the globe, and a small selection of known crosses; some 400 in total. With the exception of a number of very rare species or extinct breeds, this book is very comprehensive and offers the family a chance to review less traditional dogs before choosing a pet.Breed information is limited to a half a page to two pages per breed, but include the key referance points you would need, size, temprement, common names, colouring, coat type etc. and a brief breed history. There are also at least 3 colour photographs of of each breed, all of good quality and apear to have been taken specifically for this title. Its a very "coffee table friendly book", large sized atractivly presented, full of beautiful photographs and clear text. The chapters break up sensibly with division into the main dog groups, but also placing the various breeds in a sensible (read none alphabetical) order, so that for example the 5 different types of American "Coon Hound" are in serise, or the various Mastif/large breeds all togeather for easier comparison. An index at the back is thankfully detailed and in traditional alphabetical order for quick referance. There are general chapters on dog history, health, training and care, again well presented.Overall this title was superior to the previous dog encycolpedias we have had in all aspects, an excellent referance guide, a good starting point for owners seeking a new breed, and also a nice item to just have around just to flick through.

Definitely a Dog-tastic book for dog lovers!
I didn't actually get this book for me, but for a friend who is dog-lally. She'd asked for a dog book for her birthday, but the ones rating the highest were all for the American Kennel Club market. Not really the British thing, as you see. So I went for this one because, let's face it, how can one not trust a Fogle? Bruce has been on loads of shows, knows his stuff, and is a very intelligent man. I had this sent directly to my friend, and she is delighted with it. Very impressed with the whole thing. So, while I've not actually seen the book, a very dog-centric lady has and she is well impressed. That's enough for me!

Dog encyclopedia
All you will ever want to know about dog breeds is in this wonderful book. I've had a copy for years and am always dipping into it, but this was a Xmas present for my 10 year old granddaughter - I know she'll love it as much as I do.

Huge amount of breeds
I like this book, I got what I was expecting: a big amount of dog breeds with a lot of pictures. The cover of the book I've got is different than that one is shown, but for me it's not the most important thing. The concise descriptions of the breeds contain the main information and some historic facts, but you can't expect the book with so many breeds to have a full description of every breed, then it should have at least twice more pages. So this encyclopedia is great for those who want to have one book with huge amount of dog breeds. Those who want to have a book with detailed descriptions of some certain breeds I would advice to look for books which consist less breeds but more focused on full information about the certain breeds or breed.
