They are my favorite mechanical pencils. They are easy to use, write well, and erase completely.

Been using these for 40 years
I've used this style of mechanical pencil for over 40 years... the quality and function is as good now as it was back then. So very glad they're still available.

Simply the best
These are simply the best 0.5 mm mechanical pencils. Forget the cheap stuff at the grocery store. Get these. You won't be disappointed.

Still as sturdy and reliable as ever. Long tip is great for use with stencils and rulers.
My wife wanted these in different lead thicknesses as they have proven durable and reliable in the past. These are still as sturdy and reliable as we remembered, and I am glad they’re still available.

An excellent mechanical pencil compared to other common brands.
I really like this sturdy mechanical pencil because of its slender 4.0 mm metal tube extension which holds the advancing fine pencil lead (0.5 mm). The extra extension (not seen with other brands) provides psychological & eyeball precision when writing or drawing. The feel of this mechanical pencil is rather thin which I improved by slipping on a pencil grip of either the foam or gel type.

My favorite mechanical pencil of all time
There's a reason you can buy these USED online. They are simply high quality and last forever. I've never had one wear out or break for any reason in the 35+ years I've be using them. I decided I needed a multi-pack so I can have some to leave to my children and grandchildren when I die (just kidding - well sort of).

Mostly Excellent, But Pentel Could Improve a Couple of Things in Their Mechanical Pencils
In general, I love these mechanical pencils, which I have used since college, but a couple things could be improved (discussed below). What I use them for: - Solving math equations on plain white printer paper. I bought a pack of six pencils, but I normally use only one or two and keep the rest in reserve. Strengths - Classy looks (very professional) -- mine are black - Great, positive feel in your hand - Nice white eraser (never creates dark or peach-colored smudges) - The lead extends reliably and just the right amount with a single press on the eraser end - No loose components to twist around and mess-up your handwriting - The leads don't break as you write - Makes smooth, clean lines -- flawless, really - Never wear out under normal use -- they last forever Drawbacks - Only comes with two leads per pencil, and they are both 'HB', which is relatively hard so they draw fairly faint lines. You have to buy additional lead. I recommend '2B' for beautiful, sharp, dark lines. - The metal cap for the eraser is mostly for looks. I leave mine off because I use the eraser fairly often - After you use the eraser a few times (or press it to extend the lead), it starts to sink into the pencil and you have to pull the eraser assembly out and reset the eraser in its metal shroud, which is very annoying - Doesn't come with enough erasers. I bought more from Pentel How I Mitigate the Drawbacks: - I purchase '2B' lead separately. 2B is fairly soft, so it draws very nice, dark lines. Pentel loves that I have to purchase more pencil lead from them. - I purchase additional erasers, but I really don't go through them very quickly. Again, Pentel loves that I have to purchase more erasers from them. - To mitigate the 'eraser sink' issue, I take a small metal safety pin and cut off the sharp end so it is maybe 1/2-inch long, and I stick the tip of it between the eraser and the metal shroud around the eraser so it expands the diameter of the eraser, then I put the assembly (along with the newly inserted metal pin) back into the pencil. (The pin sits in the pencil, parallel to the spare lead, but stuck between the eraser and the tiny metal shroud.) The tighter fit makes it tougher to insert the eraser into the pencil, but it effectively prevents the eraser sinking issue I was talking about. You could probably use a common pin to serve the same purpose, but the metal in most paper clips would be too thick to use in such a solution. (I got this idea because previously, the pencil manufacturers included a thin piece of metal you could use to clear the pencil tip of any stuck lead, and the place you used to store this metal was in the eraser.)

I have used this particular model of pen for over 40 years. They are perfect. I prefer to use a softer lead - 2B - rather then the HB provided, as it gives a stronger line and is easier to erase if needed. As a deck officer in the Merchant Navy these pencils are ideal for chart plotting. For drawing and sketching they are easy to handle.

Nice pencil which feels right in the hand. As well as normal writing, I use them for marking out in my woodworking - the fine 0.5mm lead is ideal for accurate cuts and the long metal tip is great for running along the edge of a ruler.

More reliable than most of the other makes. No longer comes with steel pin in rubber for pushing out short lengths of lead, I wonder why?
