SELMER Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece (7712)

As a beginner alto sax player I chose this mouthpiece as a step up from the Yamaha 4C. It has a wider tip opening than the 4C, thus produces brighter sound. I have a LJ Hutchen student model alto sax and I use this mouthpiece in conjunction with a Rico Royal # 2 or Vandoren Java # 2.5 reed and a Rovner 1RL ligature. I have used this mouthpieces to play romantic ballads, jazz and merengue. This is a very good choice for beginner alto sax players!

Durability

If your a beginner or just want to play around with a Alto sax, then this is a good mouthpiece that does not require a lot of money. it is made of plastic and that is the sound you will get. But if you want to learn how to squeak and squeal, then turn the ligature backwards (narrow end first)on this mouthpiece and go for it. it can help you achieve the altissimo range with time and practice before you invest in a higher priced excellent quality mouthpiece.. the more i have been using it,the more i like the sound it gives me with a #3 Rico plastic cover reed but you really have to warm up the sax and the reed to get that smooth sound with the lower notes

you don't know how much a mouthpiece improves your sound until you try it! it is just a standard mouth piece though, nothing special like a crystal or rubber

Super beginner mouthpiece, but good enough for advanced players. Great general purpose tone, maybe not good for heavy jazz/blues. Works well with Rovner 1RL ligature, helps beginners not squeak.

was suppose to be for Alto Sax. Kid's music teacher said it was for a clarinet. I don't know the difference.

Just slightly smaller diameter where it attaches to instrument, making it difficult to put on and take off. I thought the cork would compress after a few weeks but it remains a challenge. Lots of cork grease and my 13 yo still struggles with it. Other than that, it seems to be well made and once in place works beautifully.

Not a mouthpiece expert but have played a variety of Selmer C Star, and Vandoren costing hundreds of dollars and still come back to this cheap mouthpiece- gives me a golden tone I can control that is smooth and " golden. Play a Selmer 3 series alto and the guys in the band thought I got a new sax, because I sounded so much better.
