Does a steak cooked on this grill taste like a steak cooked on an outside big grill?

A steak cooked on this grill tastes very good! Juicy, tender and cooked just the way you like. A great substitute for an outdoor grill!

Will it smoke out your house or apartment?

I have not had a problem with smoke from the grill. It smokes a little but nothing significant. Again, I love this product and use it all the time.

How many chicken breasts will fit on this grill at one time?

I can fit two big chicken breasts easily.....three if they're just a medium size. The grill is set up with 3/4 of it as open grill and the other 1/4 is closed grill. I stay on the open grill area mostly and use the solid part for veggies or small shrimp. I like this grill and hope you do too.

Did I read the reviews correctly? The lid is NOT a heating element? So it's essentially a skillet with a lid?

As others have said its a grill. Although the 1400W heating element gets pretty hot, its not quite as hot as gas or charcoal. That's where a lid comes in....the lid helps hold in heat as well as smoke, helping to raise the temp. further.
