This whittling set is great for beginners!While the grip is a little small for my liking, it feels smooth when carving into wood. The three blades create a balanced and versatile tool set: a small blade for tiny details, a larger blade for carving away bigger areas, and a hooked blade for when you need to make a hole/depression (i.e. open space inside spoons). They each have a small plastic cover you can use to minimize unintentionally cutting yourself.You'll need to sharpen it between uses, of course with use and wear, but the leather strop (the tan fabric included in the set) does a great job when the green compound is applied on top. It has a smooth and rough side, so you can sharpen tools to your liking.The case is basic, but it's small and compact for easy travel. It even laps over your tools, keeping your tools from falling out or being exposed. Plus, there is a strap designed to hold the case in a closed position too!Overall, i'd recommend this product to those starting out. Its cost and quality makes it a great investment for those looking to try smaller wood carvings for the first time. Cheers to crafting your first project!

This kit may be the nicest thing I've ever bought on Amazon.The package is a beautiful little box that somehow manages to hold the entire kit, safety gloves and all.I know very little about whittling - I bought this more to exercise my tired hands after eight hours a day on computers - but this seems like a set that even an experienced whittler would enjoy.The gloves meet the The European Standard for Protective Gloves, EN 388, at the highest level, a 5. That's great for older guys like me who lack the hand dexterity of twenty years ago!Each blade is carefully shaped and sharpened, and fastened to simple but gorgeous wood handles.My only complaint - and this is MY problem, not Hutsuls' - is that the hook blade appears to be geared toward right-handedness, and I'm left handed, so it looks like I may not be able to use it properly. (I might try reaching out to the company to request a left-handed version.)All in all, just absolutely beautiful. It was a joy to unwrap and I've used it the last three evenings to whittle simple ball shapes, and as I said, loosen the cramping from typing on computers all day.p.s. Don't leave the green polishing compound out in bright sun. I melted mine severely (sigh). It's perfectly functional, but not the nice rectangle it once was ;-)Thank you Hutsul!

The set is awesome and the price is even better! The only set back was the handle on the chipping knife was pretty rough on the end opposite on the knife. To the point it is kinda uncomfortable to grip tightly (without a glove). Other than that this set is a great deal!

Usually, I make my own carving tools, but wanted something quick for my daughter to try carving. These have a smaller handle than any of my personal blades, so it works better for her smaller hands. Gave her this set to try out and it was surprising how sharp and long the held an edge lasted. Want to know she really likes carving before I make a custom set, because it takes a long time. If you're just starting out carving, then I highly recommend trying these. Cut resistant gloves are a good idea as well, but the sharping stone it comes with is not so good.

They seem right for my beginner's skill level. They arrived sharp and the knives have been easy to keep sharp (haven't tried the hooked knife yet). The gloves fit my large-sized hands without a problem. The kit includes teflon covers for the smaller knives and the hook knife.

As described, grandson was happy with it.
