I teach an advanced ESL class and our school uses "Raise the Issues" as the text. Today was first day of class. The first Unit on "Enforcing the Law" featured two articles that unfortunately were humorous. The humor got absolutely nowhere with my students and the term "Tongue in Cheek" does not translate easily. The "Unsafe at Any Speed" piece was especially disastrous. I'm hoping that the author refrains from any more attempts at humor for the rest of the book.Joe RousmaniereZoni Manhattan Campus

This is good source to think many different unavoidable issues in English. Religious issues, legal issues and so on. from ridiculous matters to serious matters.

The good thing about this book is the way in which vocabulary is re-used several times in a unit. Students learn the words/phrases without really trying. The repetition seems to make them more attentive to what they are reading.Some of the vocab is unusual, to say the least; so I think it would have been better to concentrate, yes on more sophisticated words, but at least words which might come in useful a second time round.One real annoyance was the difficulty I had getting the cd (I had to go elsewhere- why sell just a part of a course?); the fact that you have to buy a separate book with the answer key; and the exorbitant price. This feeling of being ripped off spoilt the experience for me.
