Is it possible to loosen/lengthen the tether while it's weighted, like you can with a Prusik?

Not easily. It is the weight of the load that prevents the length from changing by slipping in the device. It is pretty easy to shorten the tether if you can unweight it a bit (maybe just hauling up on it if your feet are touching the stone); otherwise you would have to lift all of your own weight when pulling on the free end of the rope in the tether. Pretty much the same with lengthening. The design allows lengthening only when a serious load, such as a fall weight, is applied. That's the point, because it reduces forces by slipping. It doesn't really need a 9 mm cord (which is hard to find); 8 mm works well, it will just slip with a little less force applied. Try it in your garage to see.

Is the Kong slide the version retired by Kong, with a size less wide?

Mine looks/weighs, etc. exactly like the current one on the Kong website. Not aware there was a size less wide. Works great for me though as is. I've used it multipitching with a 7mm and 8mm (8 is what's recommended, but 7 worked fine for me) rope for my second anchoring into the wall and love it's adjustability and ease.
