Q: Does it have an off position on the switch to keep it from accidentally going off in your pocket?

Yes. Where the 3-2-1 whistle levels push it all the way & it will be in the off position.

Q: Is there a trick to getting the battery cover off? I pushed the switch down but I can't get it off. I don't want to force it and break it.

I push switch down and use my finger nail at the same time and pull it open. Not the best design but that works for me.

Q: Is there a volume control? Is that what the “3 tones” means... I want to use this in a 500 sq ft classroom. Not sure if it will be too loud.

The three tones means there are three different whistle sounds. It does not have a volume control. We use it outside to referee soccer. I have "tested" it in my house, and it's pretty loud. However, I have small rooms, also. If you use it in a short burst as opposed to a prolonged tone, you would probably be ok. However, it really depends on how loud you need it to be to be heard.
