Lights above blackboard not working. Disassembled and re assembled as well as changed batteries.

Hello. Please make sure that you have set it up on a flat surface (not carpet or tiles) and that the black circuit pieces on the base of the side pieces are lined up with the circuit pieces on the base unit (run fingers over top of unit to verify). You will need to take that school apart and re-build it with the troubleshooting suggestions. Please also try turning the toy completely over and make sure that everything has been snapped in completely. You can also verify that the switch under the radiator is firmly in the ON/Play position.

Do you have to plug it in for lights to work etc ?

This is the ONLY thing I didn't like about this item. You have to CAREFULLY assemble the walls into the floor, because the places where they join are actually how you "plug" in the features like the bell and the lights. I couldn't get it to attach and when it finally did snap into place, either the connection was bad or was broken, because only one light has ever worked. I got this last christmas and they weren't available ANYWHERE, not even in stock online, so I didn't return it because it's cute and fun enough without the bell and lights, but that would've been a nice feature. I just recommend assembling SUPER carefully. But to answer your actual question, no it doesn't plug into the wall.
