A must get for this Arena series!!
Players: 2-4 players (really only 2-player, the 3rd & 4th players are on a team)Time: 60 minutesAge: Recommended 10+Contents: 5 Planeswalker figures, 4 hero figures, 15 squad figures, 4 dual-sided cardboard terrain boards, 2 glyphs, 20 damage markers, 20-sided die, 8 combat dice, 13 army cards, 48 spell cards, turn marker, 8 counters, 6 1-hex sand tiles, 3 cryptoliths, 3 cryptolith 2-hex sand tiles, and game guide======================================OVERVIEW:This is a skirmish game like Heroscape (out of print) by using characters and spells from the Magic The Gathering universe. It's a great merge of the two systems and this Shadows of Innistrad set helps round out the series, making it totally worth getting for lots of fun.If you've never played Heroscape or have never played Magic, no worries. This is fun game is easy to learn. The majority of the rules really focus on the terrain, movement on that terrain and line-of-sight attacking/defending. Other than that, it's a fun, easy to learn game and this box allows for a good amount of strategy, as there is a some real content in this game.THE GAME:+ Can be used as a standalone game. As a standalone game, the deckbuilding is better than original, but still limited by itself as you'll play through it about a dozen sessions.+ Can be used as an expansion and probably should be used as an expansion to this game: Magic: The Gathering Arena of the Planeswalkers Game COST:+ The original Arena is less than $20, but it didn't have that much in it, single sided tiles and expansions were slow to come out. Yes, there is yet one other expansion between the original and this one, but I like this one a lot more! For around $30, it feels very worth the money. I've had some $30 or $40 games that didn't have a lot of content, but not here. I think the price point is perfect for what you get. Thus for $50 GET BOTH! With both you'll have a great game with plenty of options!!COMPONENTS:+ The rulebook is very clear and explains more than original rulebook did+ The terrain tiles boards. Double-sided!! Love it.+ NEW terrain type: the Road terrain that gives you extra movement. Nice!+ NEW terrain type: Crytoliths is a 3-d terrain that give you height advantage with some rules. We always like new terrain types and this expands on normal elevation terrain.+ A few tiles to add elevation and are compatible with Heroscape tiles. So of you have some Heroscape terrain you can combine it into this game and use the rules for that terrain to supplement any of the Arena of the Planeswalker series.+ The multi-colored planeswalkers seem pretty potent and powerful, more than the previous single colored walkers. Also, one actually can transform into a werewolf. Way cool!+ A good selection of creatures in the deck to give some variety. This is where the game feels more like an expansion because you can use the creatures from the original game too.+ Again the cards all have nice artwork.Kids love it because the spell cards are the same as actual cards from Magic, so they are already familiar with the spells.+ The figures are solid plastic for the creatures and heroes. The planeswalkers are an upgraded pre-painted plastic figure. All should last a long time and no strange thin pieces that might break off anytime soon.+ Since we can use Heroscape terrain to supplement this series, my kids are now on the hunt for how they can use their Magic cards to supplement spells in this game. We haven't found anything suggestions. . .yet. . . but they would like more variety of options. Also, since we already have thousands of Magic cards...well...we may have some house rules here soon that really play off the strengths of this game and add in some flavor from the other games we own.COMBAT:This is a lower scale than Heroscape, meaning combat is a lot quicker. For us that is a good thing.Plus you get the variety of spells from Magic, which adds some control over your character(s), whereas in Heroscape you had your unit and that was that. The quicker combat keeps the play session down to about an hour and faster pace keeps up the excitement and player involvement.LUCK VS STRATEGYThere is dice rolling and you are building a small deck of spells to cast, but the Luck is still pretty LOW.When combined with original game I feel the strategy jumps up a lot. . .I know I've already mentioned that but it does make a big different. This is the part my kids love about Magic, is finding combinations of cards that work together to make you (the wizard/caster) better than your opponent. Thus Strategy is MEDIUM to HIGH with the added options. This game by itself, the strategy would be MEDIUM simply due to less options.OVERALL:Takes only a fraction of the time to setup as it did with Heroscape, which is the only reason my kids don't play Heroscape more often (we have all the old Heroscape because it is a great game). Does NOT require "pay-to-win" advantages like Magic cards (my kids have thousands of cards and Magic is still their favorite game of all time). What I mean by pay-to-win, is if you have enough money you can buy the "best / better" cards and thus win against others when playing Magic the card game. Thus, this game sets an even playing field while still having an interactive, 3-D battle game that has the best of both Heroscape and Magic. We love it in our house!

Solid Base set/Awesome Expansion
MTG:AOTP-Shadows Over Innistrad is a new base game/expansion for the Arena Of The Planeswalkers series. The original base set was great with my only real criticisms being that the instructions were a little vague and that you didn't really have any options for deck/army building. But Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast are finally looking to change that.As an expansion, Shadows Over Innistrad (as well as the previously released Battle for Zendikar) really put those concerns to rest. With 4 new Planeswalkers and a number of different colored spell cards and squad/hero figures, player have a wealth of new customization options to explore. While this set is lacking in colorless creatures and cards, the options for the included characters as well as the previously released ones are varied and can better suit a player's unique style. This set also comes with 4 double sided terrain boards that can either expand the original base set arena or be flipped over to let players battle in all new bizarre plane of the multiverse, filled with all-new wonders and horrors: Innistrad. As a base set, this is a solid game, however the included scenarios leave a bit to be desired and the lack of terrain boards/pieces mean battles will start to feel familiar rather quickly. But the characters and creatures in this set are more than enough to keep new players interested for tons of playthroughs. There are 4 new Planeswalkers including 2 multi colored Planeswalkers that allow for a more broad range of customization and strategy and a werewolf character that can change forms and gain different abilities.Overall, while I personally feel that Shadows Over Innistrad makes for a better expansion than a base game, it is great fun on its own and serves as an absolutely perfect starting point for new players. The instructions are marginally better than the original but still not perfect, so if you are a new player and get lost remember that the internet has tons of forums and tutorial videos that will clear up any confusion. As a whole, the 3 available sets for Arena of the Planeswalkers now open up the game so much more and give it that really deep experience that I think alot of people have been craving, but still leaving the option open for lighter, casual play that I think set it apart from its predecessor Heroscape. I really, really enjoy this game, in fact it's easily among my favorites, probably of all time. I enjoy all of it's sets so far and I really hope it's successful enough to keep going. I highly recommend this set, and if you're a new player don't hesitate to start here.

The angel and clerics are great miniatures, The terrain tiles also useful for rpg's
just the miniatures alone are worth more than this costs. The angel and clerics are great miniatures, The terrain tiles also useful for rpg's . The miniatures paint up nicely. You really can't beat the bang for your buck.the game itself is fairly easy to learn and family friendly and fun. But the real value here is the miniatures. They can be used for any rpg. The theme is versitile, and event he prepainted planeswalkers care useful.this set has better paint jobs than the base set, as well.buy enough copies and you can really customize your deck. the game needed a few more sets to really show its potential... but as is typical, this one is probably dead in the water. take advantage of the value.

Fun stuff
If you like tabletop games and MTG, this is easily worth the thirty bucks. The minis are cool, and the Plainswalkers come with decent paint jobs. I actually like that none of the squad creatures came painted, I've had a good time painting them all myself. I do wish it came with more 3D terrain, and maybe some more cards for a better deck building experience. But that's really the only reason I have it four stars instead of five. What you do get is nice and worth the money. I know a lot of people but it just for the minis to play D&D and dont even bother with the game. The rules take a little time to master, but if you've played MTG and heroscape, you'll find a lot of parallels, it's a good mash up and once you get a grip on it the games are fun. If you are a do it yourselfer, you will love it; painting the minis is cool, and you can use anything you want to make custom terrain or scenery for personalized scenarios.
