My kids, 7 year old boy and 9 year old girl, love adventure stories – they want a book to get straight to the adventure and excitement straight away! And this book delivers this on page one!We’re plunged straight into the action with a scene from 1880 where a teenage boy has been locked in a shed by two shady ranch-workers.Then cut to modern-day Ohio, we meet Jake, a sad and lonely middle-grader about to set off on a 2 month road trip with his parents, around 10 of the USA’s most iconic national parks, starting with the Rocky Mountains. Jake gets a note from his grandpa, who recently passed away, and he discovers a code which leads him to a hidden scrapbook – grandpa has left a scavenger hunt for Jake through the national parks. And we’re away – off to find the first clue, at a mysterious old cabin.The kids are keen to read on and find out what happens. I couldn’t ask for more! Oh and plus it’s beautifully illustrated throughout, and I’m looking forward to learning some history and geography myself. Definitely a five star recommendation for 8-13 year old nature, history and adventure lovers.
