Q: Can these grow on their own in London and if so what time of the year should they be planted

They can grow anywhere in the UK as they are very tough

Q: How long to reach 6ft?

Impossible to say. Depends where you grow it and how you grow it. 6ft can be achieved in 3 years but in harsh climates with poor nutrients it can be more than 5 years.

Q: Do you just put the seed in soil or germinate it first?

I placed the seeds on a piece of kitchen roll, dampened it down and placed inside a small bag with holes, placed in fridge for about 2 weeks no more then planted into seed and cutting soil in a propergator on a South facing window sill which gets sun all day - about 10 have sprouted already
