Effective tool against breakouts
Kick the harsh supermarket acne pads like Clearasil and Oxy to the curb if you are well into 'mature' skin but frustratingly are still dealing with acne, or more likely right now maskne. (Am I the only one who remembers in health class years ago when they assured us Nosema-scented teens that acne disappeared when puberty was over? Lies, I tell you! Lies!) Pads like these are great for exfoliating skin while you apply treatment product, but if you exfoliate too much or the product is so strong that it strips and dries out skin, you can end up with more acne, congested skin, and flakes and redness than you began with. These pads from APRILSKIN, which is a South Korean beauty company that offers low irritation products. I've used items from their Artemisia line (their "Ultimate Skin Smoothing Set" is FANTASTIC) with great success, and so I jumped at the chance to try these blemish clearing pads to help combat the ring of mask acne that's been going on for almost a year now.The best thing about these pads is how gentle they are. Even the texture is smoother than comparable cotton pads with exfoliating embossment. These pads are meant to be used after cleaning your face first with a cleanser. This allows the product in the pads to more easily reach the affected skin and permeate trouble spots rather than mixing with and pushing around whatever dirt, grime, and/or makeup that is on your skin at the end of the day. The teeny tongs in the lid help keep the pads as contaminant-free as possible. (You can hang on to these when the blemish pads are gone and use for other skincare products like wipes in order to keep your fingers out of the package.)Even though these pads are low-irritant, they do contain multiple ingredients which can irritate skin if used too frequently. Beta-carotene is the basis for retinol, which is frequently used to treat acne, skin bumps, uneven skin tone. PHA and salicylic acid help exfoliate the skin and dissolve the gunk in pores. This allows additional acne treatment, such as benzoyl peroxide to get down into pores and get at the bacteria down there that leads to whiteheads. These three ingredients when used solo can dry out your skin and cause it to overproduce sebum and natural oils which can lead to more skin congestion and breakouts - the very things you are trying to prevent - so imagine what a combo of them can do to skin. If you do have really sensitive skin, try starting by using these pads every other day rather than every day. Directions say to use in the morning and evening after cleansing your skin, but I found that to be too drying. I'm in my 40's with dry cheeks and a still very much active T-Zone (apparently it didn't get the 'zits end with puberty memo'). Add in wearing a mask, especially with a foam seal, and I've not had breakouts like this in a long, long time. These pads do a great job at exfoliation (at least with my skin) so using twice a day caused some flaky spots to appear. Backing off to only at night after cleaning and starting out with a week of every other day use then up to every day took care of that problem. I have been using these pads after a gentle cleanser that takes off dirt and makeup but doesn't strip moisture, using additional product from Pacifica to spot treat some of the worst spots (cystic acne), completed with a non-comedogenic moisturizer about 15-20 minutes later, and this nighttime regimen has been pretty successful at knocking back the breakouts.(Don't be shocked if at first your skin starts misbehaving and your breakouts get worse. Many people go through this due to the release of trapped sebum and dirt, and typically the increase will will taper off after a few days of "WTF is going ON with my skin?!?" New blemishes should heal and not be replaced thanks to the products doing their job. If the increase in blemishes doesn't peak and then taper off, it could mean a few things. A) You are using too many products and your skin is trying to fight back. Try cutting back on how many products and how often you use them. B) Even though these are meant to be as non-irritating as possible, the product in the pads could be too strong for your skin. Maybe using once a day would work if you're using twice a day. C) You could be using the pads too aggressively on your skin by scrubbing as hard as you can, and this is causing skin irritation and inflammation. Try gently wiping the pads over clean skin to see if that helps things improve. D) You could be allergic to one or more of the ingredients. It's always important to patch test first, and even then what doesn't react on the inside of your arm (where they say to do the patch tests) could react with the skin on your face.)
