you clip the clips to the sides and front of table first (or all around the depending how you are going to use the table). If it's a head table, you put the clips only on the front and sides (with Velcro side facing you). Then you simply hang the table skirt by pressing the Velcro side of the skirt against the Velcro side on the clips. Start with the side and go across front to the other side. Hope this info helps.

Q: will these clips expand a little to fit a table 1 1/4" thick or will they likely break? I find the vertical clips don't hold the skirt well.

The clips I received wouldn't even fit a 1/2 inch table, because the size of the opening wouldn't budge from what you see in the product photo! I would advise buying a different brand If you read my review, it will tell you the fiasco I had to deal with setting up a booth at a craft fair, with clips that wouldn't work! I strongly advise that you find clips sold by a different company. The plastic needs to be pliable to work, and these were not pliable.
