Awesome Resource for Pronunciation Blues
Like most books in the "How to.." series, such as How to Teach Grammar (How To...), "How to Teach Pronunciation" by Gerald Kelly is an awesome book for teachers in need of some advice and input on the area of pronunciation. The book has a variety of chapters on different aspects. It begins with the basics, (vowel and consonant sounds), and builds up to intonation and connected speech. There are excellent chapters on stress, sentence stress and more. Every chapter has sample lessons that illustrate some great ideas for teaching. They are all very adaptable. The book has some excellent theoretical aspects, giving rules for connected speech and the like, for example. The theory is very clear, gives you a good run down on the terminology and keeps it all very real. The book really was written for the working teacher.Choosing this one or Sound Foundations (Teacher Development) is a tough call. I would tend to go with both, as they have both got some serious advantages over each other.Either way, I found this book an excellent source of new direction, new clarity and new focus on the ever present pronunciation blues. Totally recommended!
