Pentax PF-65ED-A II Spotting Scope w/Field Case

This is my 3rd spotting scope for birding - and it is outstanding. I coupled it with the fixed optics Pentax 70516 SMC-XW 20 1.25-Inch Eyepiece that Pentax says produces a 27x magnification and apparent 70 degree field of view. The scope is relatively light (not quite as light as the old Eagle Optics Raven I had before) - comfortable to pack on day hikes. The lighting and clarity thru the scope are excellent - about half the price (or less) than Swarovski or Kowa, and to my subjective eye - equivalent. I wear glasses, and the eye relief (distance between my eyeglasses and the eyepiece for comfortable viewing) is very comfortable. The black rain-weather case that came with it is very durable, and OK - but I would have preferred one with a velcro patch to get the fat 80 mm primary lens cover out of the way. I use a rubber band. And - the bent angle eyepiece end of the cover is OK, but you need the to use the sewn-on snap strap (it comes with) to get it out of the way ... not very elegantly designed. The focus knob at the top moves easily and very accurately - and birds basically pop out with clear colors ... but ducks (for example) moving toward you or away from you you'll need to use the easy focus knob on the top to keep the bird in it's narrow field of view - something I think is common with all scopes of this precision. This is a great scope / eyepiece combo for about $1K total. Fortunately, I had a lightweight tripod already, - and can continue to use that.

The Pentax PF 80 ED is a surprisingly nice scope at a very reasonable price. In my limited use (so far) I can easily discern very small nail heads on weathered wood well in excess of one hundred yards - the maximum distance available in my yard. Since my primary use will be as a spotting scope for small caliber rifle shooting I expect that I will easily discern 22 caliber bullet holes to 300 yards or more in decent light. I could not be more pleased and I am looking forward to using the scope under real world conditions very soon.

Had this and my Skywatcher 80ED side by side and I was stunned at the visual images. I hit Mars Jupiter and Saturn with both of them and a Pentax 10mm XW and I was floored. Identical and I actually favored the Pentax on Jupiter. Open sky was nice with a 24mm Pan. It won’t replace my SW for astrophotography and higher mags and the prism will certainly make for difficult viewing at zenith angles but it’s nice to know I can take this along and have a nice spotter and light telescope. Wonderful scope. Waterproof no less. I grabbed it on Amazon for under $700 which is a steal for this calibre scope in my opinion. Destroys my 100mm Celestron Ultima even with a 20mm aperture deficit. Crystal clear .223 holes at 150 yards. I mean crystal. Make sure you use a tripod worthy of this scope.

IMO Excellent glass, Made in Japan, much much easier to set up than my 3ft Orion telescope that was too heavy and bulky for a beginner like myselfFortunately I already had the Pentax zoom eyepiece fits both

Being very familiar with Pentax Telescopes and eyepieces I decided to give the Field scope a try. My intended use was competition rifle shooting and i needed this scope for viewing targets at 1000 yards. The scopes quality of construction is excellent it is covered in the typical rubberized material. The focuses is very precise and operates smoothly. When testing a focuser you want to see and image snap into focus then snap out. This field scope does exactly that. The internal baffling works well and the images are bright and crisp. The detail in objects this scope provides makes it superior to many others.I am confident when I recommend this as a Birding or Shooting scope. Where it doesn't do well is Planetary viewing there will be color fringing errors on the planet edges.

This is a really nice spotting scope. I have it set up on a tripod in the living room and can see whales and seals cavorting in the waves. The angled scope is nice as I can easily swivel it and to lower it for my wife to look through without having to adjust the tripod. I have the SMC-XW 20mm eyepiece to go with it and it is a crystal clear view. The eyepiece is *much* nicer than the Celestron 24mm eyepiece I got with my 10" Meade telescope. Can't wait to try the eyepiece with my telescope.too. I tried the 2X Barlow in the PF-80 but the extra magnification came at a very servere cost - and really much better view without it. Nonetheless its really nice that the eyepieces are standard 1.25" size so I can share with the telescope. Think I may get one of the zoom eyepieces next.

this scope has served me well for quite a few years. at the time it was great for the price there were others similar but way out of my budget.

As spotting scope or even as a telescope at night, the quality and sharpness of this scope is just incredible for the price. It helps to have good eyepieces (the combo of this scope and a Panoptic 19mm is first class) but even with a lowly plossl it still delivers great views

This is a very good scope, at least as good as the Opticron it replaced. It is bright, sharp, with excellent optics. It seems very well put together, and has one enormous advantage over most other scopes - it accepts normal astronomical eyepieces. This means that if you do both bird-watching and astronomy, you only need one set of eyepieces. The fitting mechanism for eyepieces is really excellent - quick and well-designed.However, the scope which was sent to me was not new. The seal was broken, and the packaging was damaged inside and out. This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened. So I returned it, and bought it elsewhere.

Dieses Spektiv bietet eine ausgezeichnete optische Leistung. Es ist sehr scharf, kontrastreich, hell und zeigt natürliche Farben. Chromatische Aberrationen sind wegen des verwendeten ED-Glases praktisch nicht zu sehen, am Tage schon gar nicht, höchstens mit extremen Vergrößerungen bei nächtlichen Himmelsbeobachtungen. Der allergrößte Vorteil dieses auch mechanisch sehr wertig verarbeiteten Gerätes ist, dass beliebige 1,25" - Okulare verwendet werden können, welche bei Hobbyastronomen oft zahlreich in der Schublade liegen.Wer also bereits ein Teleskop mit guten Okularen besitzt, landet wegen der Kompatibilität mit vielen Okularen fast zwangsläufig bei Pentax.Ich selbst verwende am Spektiv die Pentax XW-Okulare (5mm, 10mm und 20mm). Absolut begeistert bin ich bei Verwendung des 20mm-Okulares. Das Seherlebnis steht dabei selbst dreifach teureren Hochleistungsspektiven nicht nach. Mit 5 mm ist das Gerät meines Erachtens an seiner Leistungsgrenze, dabei wird aber immerhin eine 104-fache Vergrößerung geboten, welche ich nur bei astronomischen Exkursen zur Planetenbeobachtung nutze. Dafür ist es auch ganz gut geeignet. Am Tage wird das Bild bei dieser extremen Vergrößerung aber schon sehr dunkel und auch etwas flau. Das ist aber auch bei den ganz teuren Profispektiven der Fall, weil die Austrittspupille dann nur noch bei 0,8 mm liegt. Man muss eben bedenken, dass Spektive eigentlich nicht für so hohe Vergrößerungen gebaut werden.Ergänzend habe ich noch ein einfacheres Explore Scientific Okular mit 26 mm Brennweite in Verwendung, welches eine 20-fache Vergrößerung in wirklich guter optischer Qualität liefert. Die dabei resultierende Austrittspupille von 4mm ergibt auch bei weit fortgeschrittener Dämmerung noch eine gute Sichtbarkeit von herumstreifendem Wild.Fazit: Ich würde dieses Spektiv wieder kaufen. Noch eine Anmerkung zum Schluss: Solch spezielle optische Geräte kauft man wirklich am besten im Fachhandel, weil man dort beraten wird sowie ausprobieren und vergleichen kann.

habe das Pentax PF 80 EF mit den Okularen XW 3,5 mm, XW 7 mm, und XW 14 mm. Das ergibt eine Vergrößerung von 144X, 72X, und 36X. Mit XW 14 mm und XW 7mm ist die Handhabung noch recht einfach, ein gutes Fotostativ reicht schon. Beim XW 3,5 mm mit 144X Vergrößerung braucht man ein extrem stabiles Stativ mit einem entsprechenden Kopf.Nun zur Bildqualität, sie ist überragend mit dem XW 14 mm und XW 7mm. Mit dem XW 3,5 ist sie immer noch sehr gut, auch wenn die Bildhelligkeit etwas leidet. Aber wir sprechen hier von 144X Vergrößerung, das bietet kein anderer Hersteller. Bei denen ist bei 75X Schluss. Bin kein Freund von Zooms, mit Festbrennweiten hat man einen viel größeren Bildkreis (Sehfeld XW 14 mit 36X 35 m auf 1000m, das Zoom bei 20X 33 m auf 1000 m) und die Bildqualität ist auch viel besser. Sie ist auf dem selben Niveau wie die drei Großen aus Europa.

Este telescopio Pentax PF 65 Ed a II tiene una relación calidad-precio muy buena, y tiene la gran ventaja de que admite cualquier ocular de uso astronómico con barril de 1.25" que es la medida universalmente mas usada.Ahora bien en mi opinión hay que investigar un poco y elegir bien el ocular.Pentax ha fabricado 3 oculares para este telescopio en concreto que son el XF 8,5 (46 aumentos) el XF12 (32.5 aumentos) y el XF 6.5-19.5 (zoom de 20 a 60 aumentos).Como mi anterior telescopio de otra marca tenia un ocular zoom y estaba acostumbrado a él encargué también en Amazon el ocular 20-60 aumentos recomendado por Pentax, y debo decir que aunque está muy bien diseñado y la calidad óptica incluso al máximo aumento de 60x es bastante buena tiene en mi opinión un "efecto cerradura o túnel" bastante acusado.A la mayoría de la gente es algo que no le importa,y de hecho amigos míos han observado por este ocular y no han notado nada,pero a mí personalmente me molesta un poco (supongo que es una manía mía).Como digo la calidad óptica de este ocular zoom sobre todo entre los 30 y los 40 aumentos es muy buena estando a la altura de oculares mas caros como algunos swaroski o zeiss,sino fuera por ese detalle del "efecto túnel" sería en mi opinión un ocular de 10.Por otra parte el telescopio esta muy bien construido, el enfoque es muy bueno ni muy duro ni muy suave, el parasol tiene un resalte que te ayuda a localizar las aves muy rápidamente, el movimiento lateral rotatorio del telescopio sobre el trípode funciona con dos "clicks" y está muy bien pensado.En resumen y tal como indico en el titulo muy buen cuerpo de telescopio pero hay que elegir bien el ocular.EDITADO A 16/09/2023.Después de consultar muchos foros de aves compré,además del ocular zoom,los dos oculares fijos de Pentax desarrollados para este telescopio, el XF12 (32,5 aumentos) y el XF8.5 (46 aumentos) y no puedo estar mas contento con ellos.La nitidez y el brillo son una maravilla en todo el campo de visión, sin rastro de aberraciones cromáticas y al ser oculares de focal fija no tienen el efecto cerradura que tiene el ocular zoom.Después de varios días usando el telescopio el único defecto que le encuentro es que la goma negra que cubre el cuerpo es un imán para el polvo y las pelusas y tengo que pasarle un paño húmedo cuando vuelvo a casa después de cada uso.Ahora por poco mas de 1400 euros tengo un telescopio y tres oculares que puedo usar en cualquier situación y que rivaliza en brillo y nitidez con el swaro 65 HD que vale 1000 euros mas (comprobado in situ).Muy contento con la compra.
