Move over Grill! It's time to try an Electric Smoker!
I got this book for my husband as a gift because he was looking to expand his cooking skills. I figured this book would help him make a jump from using the grill to using an electric smoker. This book was perfect as it explains everything from the different types of smokers and choices of woods to use, to great new marinades and BBQ sauces! There are many meat (and vegetable!) recipes with easy to understand directions for the newbie. Some are pretty familiar ("Smoked Prime Rib"), some are exotic ("Fireball Whiskey Meatballs"), and some are downright gourmet ("Bacon-Wrapped Crab-Stuffed Shrimp")! My husband has been very happy with this cookbook and his newly expanded meal preparation skills. I'm happy because I've enjoyed the new recipes too (especially the veggie and dessert options) and I love it when I get a break from the kitchen! Bill West provides practical tips for entertaining, and gives useful information about ingredients along the way. He also injects humor now and then too. I highly recommend the book to anyone looking to explore the world of smoking, expanding their cooking skills or just looking for great new BBQ sauces and marinades to try.

Great for first time smokers.
This is a great book if you’ve just bought your first electric smoker. The recipes could be used on any other type of smoker but having directions that are specific to an electric model makes starting out a breeze. The recipes we’ve tried so far (pork shoulder, brisket, turkey) have been simple but fabulous. The suggestions on what type of wood chips to use with each recipe are particularly helpful and I appreciate that there are some recipes for sauces included even though they aren’t made in the smoker.

Eh-
It has some good ideas and it presents a pretty good way to get started for someone who is new to using a smoker. The author uses short cuts like using pumpkin pie spice mix and doesn’t tell you what those spices are so we don’t have to go out and buy more spices. The author was not knowledgeable about different types of smoke- implying that it was all the same. My guess is that there are going to be some mighty upset users after applying whatever smoke they bought....

Decent cook book, poor printing
This book is pretty good. I was hoping for a little bit more general guidance on using an electric smoker and going over concepts as opposed to specific recipes. The few recipes I’ve made so far have come out pretty well. I will say the recipes also are a bit disorganized. For example in the pork section, I think traditional ribs and butt recipes should be right up front but they’re both a little buried in that chapter after the more specialty recipes.I docked another star because the printing of this book was very poor. Every other page is fine, but the ones in the middle had the type set offset slightly or something (like by 1/16th of an inch). So it is legible but looks as it it were blurry.

Just what I wanted
So I usually buy a recipe book and try out the one that I think would be good and then get disappointed when I do not like it. Or they are filled with unusual things I could find here even if I wanted to. So I decided to give this book a try (kindle version) starting with the competition baby back ribs. Oh boy did these turn out fantastic! I'm going to use the leftover sauce on grilled chicken, it is so good. There are several other recipes in this book that I can't wait to try. It is also filled with a lot of information about smoking which is what I was truly looking for since I am relatively new to electric smoking. This is a must have for the inexperienced. This book is just what I wanted and more.

The jerky came out super dry and grainy
I'll continue to give it another chance, however the temperatures on the three recipes I've tried seems to be off. My food is coming out extremely dry and over barked. The jerky came out super dry and grainy. And the pork roast ended up being extremely dry and grainy and texture. But it might just be my cooker but I'm following the recipes according to their electric cooker Masterbuilt directions.

Cooking time is off on several of the recipes
The recipies are good but highly disappointed with how off the cooking times are with this book. I cooked two different recipes and both took way longer to cook then what the book said. The weight of the meat was the same as the recipe and I also thought my thermometer could be a little off in my smoker. So, I used a different one and it was the same. So it was NOT my thermometer either. The pulled pork recipe said 8-9 hours to cook...well it took about 24 hours!! My advice, if you get this book, is to Google the time for what your cooking and go with that.

Looking forward to trying them all!!
Bought it as a present for the husband. I was tired of him wanting to smoke dinner. While I made all the sides to go with the smoked meat. But this book has lots of recipes. Everything from pork, to chicken, to beef, and even seafood. Also has side dish recipes. The quantities for the recipes are not very large. But who isn’t trying to loose weight anyway!!

Also recipes poor for small quantities
American; most recipes for outdoor large smoker. I bought a pressure cooker/smoker so not much use for me. Also recipes poor for small quantities.

Great launching pad
This is a good book for beginners to learn the basics. It covers all of the techniques you need to get familiar with, and it has a good (not exhaustive) selection of recipes to try on your own. If you invested in a smoker, then you should invest in this book as well. It helps get you started down the proper path.

Its an ok book but wouldnt have bought it if i had seen it first.
It has some nice recipes but no pics, witch i was very disappointed in. It also dont tell you how much smoke to use , again disappearing. I realize ppl tastes for smoke varies but give a aproximit amout like one or 2 pans...
