Some big topics for younger readers
I bought this book to read to my son for his third grade homeschool curriculum. We both enjoyed it. It started many conversations about geography, religion, family and pirates.

Best book I’ve read in a long time
I just finished reading this book to my 7 and 8yo sons. It was so beautifully written! I feel so sad there isn’t a sequel. We couldn’t put it down.

Great story with rich vocabulary!
This story has great details, wonderful vocabulary, and plays in historical details as well. I have enjoyed this as a read-aloud with elementary aged kids as I enjoyed reading it so much myself.

Beautifully written.
An important book often left out of traditional homeschool curriculums because of the controversial anti-inquisition sentiment. Not too upsetting for my 8 year old at the time, who was prone to being upset. But not whitewashed either. Beautifully written.

I read this aloud to my 5 and 8 year olds. They enjoyed the story and were enthralled by the little girl's adventure. This book led us down several rabbit holes of research into historical facts and interesting musical instruments, so it made for hours of interesting conversation as well. I thought the subject matter was handled in such a way that my sensitive 5 year old could understand.

Interesting book
Great book . I am reading to my 9 year old son as he studies the 1600s. Based on true events so that is a selling point for him .

Historically Significant
A reasonably good fiction book giving an insight into a lesser know bit of history. It appears to be historically accurate, though some of the specific minor cultural details appear to me to be questionable.
