When I bought my used utility trailer a few years ago, the left latch for the drop gate was already broken off. From my amateurish inspection of the weld site, I believe that the welding had been done wrong and probably acted almost like a cutter instead of a weld.I considered a few options for replacing the two heavy duty bungee cords that had been provided to hold the gate up. I certainly wanted something more likely to hold up over time. I just hadn’t followed through on anything until this month.Even with many reviews saying this latch is too big, I decided to take a chance for my use. Upon receiving the new latch and testing it for size, I found out that this is the same size as the latch on the right side of the gate, which was evidently the same size as the latch that’s missing, judging from the receiver plate and the two weld holes where the left latch had been attached.Another mistake a previous owner made was not using all the parts in the latch kit. Without the base plate, the handle sits too far forward from where it should be to fit the hole in the plate that fits on the rail of the trailer, especially when the receiver plate was welded where it should be to fit with the base plate in place.I’m calling the base plate the flat plate with the two screw holes that fits on one side of the handle. I included a picture of that welded latch to show that the latch has no base plate. The curved plate over the handle is welded directly to the gate without the base plate as a spacer.I used a couple quick clamps to help me test fit the parts and I saw that they would all fit. It doesn’t matter to me and to my application that the base plate for the handle is wider than the square tubing for the trailer gate. I still have plenty of room on the outside edge of that for the gate to swing up and down freely when the latch is disengaged. Also, this kit is the same size as the gate latch on the right side.I already had some self-drilling screws, but I needed longer screws with larger diameter. The holes in the base plate are too large for the head on #10 screws I had, so I picked up some self-drilling hex head #14 x 1-1/2 inches. To help fit, I also used a ¼ x ½ washer under each screw. Those screws and washers did the job. If you have the same application, realize that 1-1/4-inch screws would also work.Barring any mishaps, I expect this new latch will not need replacing. It’s on there for good.

Very heavy duty, just be sure to read the description well, this was much larger than what I expected and I had to send it back.

Heavy duty. I used them to attach my smoker box to my grill. The brackets welded onto the firebox with no issues at all.

I purchased two latches for a unity trailer body I was building for my son's small trailer. They work just as I hoped they would. They are heavy duty latches and would be suitable for much larger project.

the latch arrived on time . The quality of this latch better than I expected, very rugged. I use it on the tail gate of my trailer and it works perfectly.

Larger than I thought it was. My fault, didn't pay attention to the specs. But its definitely sturdy.

If I use 1" thick wood, the bolt holes will be too close to the wood.
