No plot, but beautiful imagery
George Macdonald is the man! But got a little lost in this as it was very episodic without building to any type of climax

Amazing world!
I only read this book upon learning that tgis book was intrigal in CS Lewis's convwrsion to Christianity. I am glad I did. The detailed world and visions that MacDonald portrays are amazing and magical. The adventure was well worth it. The symbolism was immensely creative. I enjoyed this book and would recommend this book to anyone who like fairytales and classic literature.

A bittersweet journey, that brought me to tears at times, filled with eternal truths in the guise of fantasies. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Very Fantasy
This is my first George Macdonald book. After I found out he was a major influence to CS Lewis, I wanted to read his work. This book might throw you a bit of you're not used to fantasy, but it is brilliantly written. The way each scene is described and the feelings they inspire make it near impossible to not let your imagination wander.

No illustrations!
The author's son's main reason for publishing this edition (see preface, p2) was to rescue Phantastes "from an edition illustrated without the author's sanction", i.e. illustrated by an artist other than Arthur Hughes, the distinguished pre-Raphaelite artist who had worked regularly with Macdonald and had done the original illustrations for this book. Very disappointed to find that the illustrations have been completely removed from this version!

Great Literature - Disappointing Product
This version of MacDonald's classic fantasy provides a list of Arthur Hughes's wonderful illustrations - but does not include the illustrations themselves! Furthermore, the publisher does not seem to have taken the trouble to employ a proof-reader - or if he has, then that worthy should be sacked. So I recommend looking to another publisher for a copy of this book.
