A genre blending success!
II waited 8 years before watching this, purely on a whim to pass some time!Cowboys and Aliens a Title that in itself sounds far fetched and ridiculous....BUTSurprisingly it works, is very entertaining and actually is a much better version of "Independence Day".Daniel Craig makes a very good Cowboy Outlaw turned Hero. The script is pretty decent and the effects are satisfyingly believable and gritty. Not an "America Saves the Day" but an "Ordinary people survive an impossible situation".What on the face of it sounds a ridiculous plot line actually worked rather well. Keith Carradine, Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig made a surprisingly good trio with an excellent supporting cast of actors including Walton Goggins, Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde (who looks like a more glamorous Summer Glau).Daniel Craig of the steely jaw and icy blue eyes swapped his dapper 007 suits and fast cars for some exceptionally flattering chaps and a dashing horse. He makes a very believable Cowboy.I have now watched it four times and will watch it many more times. If, like me you were put of by the seemingly implausible title give the film a try you might be pleasantly surprised.10/10

Splendid nonsense.
An "A-grade" "B-movie", I think. Splendid nonsense, nicely made. Daniel Craig is, of course, mahogany-esque all through the film, but the effects are fun, the aliens are on the "how the heck did they build - and how do they fly - a spaceship" side of "animal" but I thought it all came together nicely. I didn't feel like a better person after watching this, but I did feel wholly entertained.

Icky and average... Just another big, evil aliens out to destroy the world flick.
When this first came out I dismissed it as an Alien, Predator wannabe flick, produced solely as a commercial exercise. Re-considering the great potential of the story line, that I love period and science fiction/fantasy films (and that two of my very favourite actors are in it) I decided I had wrongly overlooked the film. The idea is genius: 19th century cowboys in conflict with otherworldly aliens... Now after seeing it, it is just what I first imagined. What has the potential to be a great film, is just another sort of icky and typical sic-fi/horror thriller complete with vicious, ugly monsters (imagine caterpillar DNA muddled with The Rock, Dwayne Johnson) who want to destroy humanity on Earth for really no reason at all. On top of the tepid storyline and writing, everything else is just okay.

A fun way to spend some time
Such a nonsense name for a film, that I wasn't expecting much. In the end it was the essence of hokum, providing an exciting time with a stretch of irony and cartoon violence. Harrison Ford is a reasonable "baddy" almost playing the Han Solo role again, with a six shooter. Olivia Wilde was excellent as the mysterious female sacrifice and Daniel Craig played his Layer Cake insouciance with ease.

Try it first
I thought I would hate this just by the title, but my partner wanted to see it, so we did. I was very surprised, it was such a good film, very magnetic, very well put together, and I got right into the story. The producers used a very believable alien set up, very much blended with the cowboys and their attitudes. Not a classic that you want to watch over and over, but a very enjoyable film non the less. Daniel Craig and all the cast were so well chosen and did a good job for them.

Could have been So good...
...instead its just an exciting premise that somehow never translates its full potential to the screen. The "cowboy" bits especially at the very start are quite gritty and sets you up to think this will have you riveted for the next 100mins or so. Expectations are therefore quite high by the time the "aliens" come into the picture. But then the pacing of the movie becomes erratic, some things just don't add to the storyline, or add up - Upside down riverboat episode anyone? Or the dog that miraculously survives an alien encounter? Time is spent developing depth to characters that's frankly not needed, and its to the detriment of pacing - I don't want a dose of sentiment or character introspection when watching a movie called "Cowboys and Aliens", let's leave that to "True Grit" or "Unforgiven" or (insert your own favourite gritty and deep cowboy movie here).Almost as overcompensation for the emotional mawkishness, you are then occasionally entertained with scenes of quite bloody violence, prolonged in the finale. Overall its not quite 'balanced', and frankly you're left feeling there should be more, by the end. But Daniel Craig's great in character, looks quite fetching in chaps, and has a waist that's trimmer than any of his leading ladies.

Does what it says on the tin
Cowboys and Aliens kind of does what it says on the tin. The opportunity to play a straight western and then have a big alien plot twist is missed as the film simply plays to its title. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford lead a posse against an alien force who can't stand the heat despite their suprior fire power. It's an interesting film which asks lots of questions and goes I'm the right direction but overall I felt it could have been done better.
