The Best Morakniv?
If you could only leave home with one knife for the rest of your life, which knife would it be? Well, the Morakniv Companion Heavy Duty might be one worth considering, for pretty much anyone, but especially if you are on any kind of budget.True, not a full tang fixed blade, but a grippy, sturdy, comfortably inviting handle ready for any kind of reasonable use in a camp setting. Maybe not the best food prep knife, but it will get the job done in a pinch AND reliably break down an elk, feather wood for burning, and should even serve reasonably well in a self defense role, should it come to that. The Scandinavian grind makes it ridiculously easy to sharpen with any reasonably flat stone or diamond sharpener. Takes a fine edge, hangs onto it reasonably well, resists damage admirably. Sturdy, no-nonsense plastic sheath with integrated belt loop is easy to wear, to forget about while wearing it, and to rig for different methods of carry. If there was any complaining to do, it might be done about the carbon steel blade. But is anyone going to complain about that carbon steel being 0.125" (3.2mm) thick? I doubt it. Any problems which might arise from corrosion are easy to mitigate with regular maintenance and/or the ever-popular preventative maintenance of a boiling vinegar patina, followed by a good beeswax. Out of that, you'll not only get a blade better protected from the environment, but also the coolest-looking Companion HD on your block, guaranteed. Double points if you bought the OD Green one. Another minor area of contention might be that the sheath is not made to carry on the left side of the body. A minor inconvenience for ~10% of the population (myself included). If that is important to you, the Kansbol, Garberg, or Mora 2000 models might be more what you're looking for. At any rate, any person reasonably knowledgeable in bushcraft/survival will find your choice difficult not to respect. That's hard to ask from any ~$20 product (at the time of this writing) these days, but Morakniv manages it here.To sum it up as succinctly as possible, the Companion HD is just about everything you need and nothing you don't in an outdoor knife. If you don't yet own a Morakniv, this is a great one (maybe the best one) to start with, and could easily be the last knife you ever buy. Though if you're anything like me, it won't be. It's difficult not to want to support a company that makes such high-value, affordable products.

Happy Valentine's Day to Me
I wanted to get his/her knives for Valentine's Day gifts so, I chose this one for myself and the Companion, in Magenta Color, for my wife. Amazon shipping, once again, did a fine job!Straight Out of the box review:I purchased this particular knife as I had searched various knife/outdoorsman sites plus, sifted through Amazon reviews to find a knife that would meet several practical characteristics at a good value. Mora overwhelmingly has won over a majority of folks and you can now count me into the mix since my initial impression.First, as someone who does some hiking, camping and possibly, some backpacking, I wanted a knife solid enough to be of use in all of these categories, while staying within my budget. I do not baton or chop with my knives, but, I wanted one that could possibly handle some light work in either area. The thicker blade appears to be up to the task, for all of these purposes. It is still sufficiently lightweight enough to either carry in a pack or on your side. Though it says "heavy duty," that is mainly meant in comparison to the regular Mora Companion.Second, I live in Texas where gun laws are loose but, knife laws, not so much, go figure. Therefore, the legal length of my blade cannot exceed 5.5" for EDC. Hence, the 4.1" blade of this knife was appealing to me. I am pleased with, both, its length and its width for durability and versatility.Third, my hands, while not huge, are still fairly large, so, I wanted a beefier handle to fit them well. This HD Companion fits perfect along with utilizing material that could maintain its grip in wet weather.Fourth, aesthetics are also important to me, as well as functionality, so, the color of the knife handle and sheath spelled outdoorsman with the combination of military green and black. While I prefer a wood handle, this grip is actually more conducive to wet climates.I gave it four stars due to it being a carbon steel as opposed to stainless steel, as I do not desire my blades to rust. I also like the blades to maintain their shine. However, the carbon steel will hold its sharpness longer, so, that is a worthy trade out. (I can easily purchase another Mora with a Stainless Blade). The lack of a full tang and leather sheath also took it down a notch. I do like the plastic sheath much better than I thought, though. It compliments the knife well, the knife snaps in securely into place and should do well in wet environments. My plan is to update this after a year as too many knives are reviewed without really putting them to the test with regular usage. Unless one is a mere collector, the point of owning a knife is to utilize them.Stay tuned.
