Bought this for an inside look at Japanese theatre, and that's what I got. It has everything from Kabuki to the Onnagata to Noh to Masks. It's literally one of the best Japanese Theatre books out there.

No editor for No Theatre?
Dense text of Japanese theatre history. Interesting and informative, but not for someone who wants a general idea of Japan's dramatic forms and religious rituals. Purchased this copy from B&N, but they have such a worthless site, I'm leaving my review here. My biggest issue with this book--I'm in about 130 pages--is the unacceptable amount of typos. Was this book edited? Edition: Princeton, 1995.

Brilliant, thorough, useful
This volume somehow manages to cover the whole complex history of Japanese theatre in a single volume. It has an excellent glossary and a well-organized bibliography. An useful introduction to Japanese theatre both for the serious student and for the neophyte. Extremely useful for courses in Asian Theatre or Japanese Culture.
