A honing rod is used to keep your knife blades sharp in-between proper sharpenings. The kitchen knife set I bought many years ago came with a small round honing rod. It works, but I wanted one that was a bit longer, and I was really intrigued when I can across this one. Not only is it longer, but instead of being a rod, it’s a flattened circle shape, giving me much more cutting surface than the rod has.There is much more steel in this one making it rather heavy. That’s good as it gives a solid support when sliding the blade across it. The cutting surface is about 12” long and the hard plastic handle is about 4” long. The cross guard sits a bit above the plastic grip, so there’s enough room to comfortably hold this with my large hand. The etching is very fine, and most importantly it works brilliantly to keep my knives sharp. I usually will run a blade over this a few times before every use, and that does make it so I don’t need to properly sharpen my knives as often.I can wholeheartedly recommend this heavy duty flat honing rod. It’s a definite upgrade from what normally comes with kitchen knife sets.

I have a nice Henckel's sharpening steel that I've had for 20 years or so. I've never seen one with this "oval" design and decided to give it a try. This is a large and heavy tool that feels good in the hand. I find it very easy to use and I've found that it puts a nice edge on my knives.The only gripe I have is that the plastic handle looks cheap. The steel comes in a lovely box and is packaged like a premium product, but this is all let down by the cheap looking handle. This is a minor thing, but it's noticeable.

I like the weight and shape of this product so far. It's still fairly new but has been used several times in the past month. Only time will tell how well it holds up . But happy so far .

This is a large and heavy duty knife sharpener. I compared this to my Chicago Cutlery sharpener and it is much larger, and gets the knives very sharp. Since I am used to the skinny round sharpener, it took several seconds to get used to this one. But when I did, my set of knives became sharp in a matter of seconds.This has a lot more surface area than the one that came with my knife set, so it seems that I get the knives to peak sharpness with fewer strokes. I recommend this product for those that butcher a lot of meat or process deer themselves.

Steel comes in a gift/storage box. Used this to put a fine edge on a good set of Tramontina SS kitchen knives and it did great with three passes per side. Anyone considering one of these should look for a grip which protects your hand and a hook so you can hang it so it won't get beat up in a drawer. This is on the larger size from a length standpoint, so you should have no problem sharpening a large knife in a single pass.

This sharpener means business! It's huge, heavy, and well-made. It reminds me of a sword. It will put a very sharp edge on a knife in no time. A must-have for people who like to cook, especially if you have nice knives.
