The Mushroom Fan Club

I bought this book to take to Forest School as I have a little friend who adores looking for Fungi. We had a great day foraging in the woods and then read the book to find out some more mushroomy facts while drinking warm apple juice. Highly recommended.

I wish something like this had been around when I was younger! I've always been interested in mushrooms from a young age (mainly from playing Super Mario Bros). Unfortunately when I was little, the only mushroom books around at the time were written for adults, so the language in them was very difficult to understand.I bought this book as a gift for my partners son who started taking an interest in mushrooms after we went for a walk in the woods and I was pointing out all the different species to him. I thought, wouldn't it be great if there was a mushroom book written for children, then I stumbled across this. I love the adorable illustrations, mushroom facts and the way it's written for children so it's really easy to understand. He loved it so much that he takes it to bed with him every time he comes to stay and reads it over and over again.His favourite mushroom is the puffball and mine is the Fly Agaric!

My little girl got this for her third birthday and it is still her favourite book now she’s four. And I love to read it too. Beautiful material, lovely colours. A bit of a sorry and really educational about mushrooms and foraging.

I got this book because my 5-year-old developed an interest in mushrooms. He loves the cartoony pictures and I love its silly friendly style. We have seen way more mushrooms of all different types when were are out about this year because we are looking out for & taking notice of them now.

I bought this for my grandsons aged 10 and 8. They both loved it read it through and are now doing projects related to thing they read in the book.

Beautiful artwork little ones and big ones enjoyed so much

I hadn't read anything by Gravel at all but haven't seen a review of this online, I was intrigued. Gravel's narrative is immediately welcoming as she finds a lovely balance between being informative and openly addressing the reader in a companionable and welcoming manner. She has a quirky, funny approach to talking about her subject matter (I like drawing googly eyes on mushrooms) but is always well informed and educational. A lot of white space emphasises the focus on the cartoon-like mushrooms and this is more of a get-out-there-and-enjoy-exploring than something more akin to a Dorling Kindersley which is more than fine by me. Some nice little activities at the back as well as a lovely photo of the author and her children exploring a range of fungi. This will be loved in the classroom.

Outstanding book on mushrooms for kids (and adults)! My four year old sat and listened to the whole book and interacted with the info and illustrations. The book is laid out very well, and the superb illustrations appeal to kids. I also adore the tone of the writing as you feel the enthusiasm the author has for mushrooms, and it is catchy! I look forward to revisiting this book many times as we learn about fungi over the years.

An easy introduction to mushrooms and mushroom hunting. My 4 year old has decided he’s super interested in mushrooms lately, and so we have been reading this book on repeat. The illustrations are adorable, and I love that it makes very clear to kids that they shouldn’t eat random mushrooms they find. It’s an easy read, but one I don’t mind reading 1-2x each night at bedtime.
