a classic!
I'll never forget the impact this book had on me when it was released. Unfortuately over the years I lost this great book, so I'm glad I was able to order it again. Extremely well written insiders information, featuring a host of guest-writers. Peter Simon's pictures are brilliant too. For those who want to play or mix reggae, a chapter is devoted to what riddims are all about, and the mistakes non-Jamaicans tend to make. If you love ska, rocksteady, reggae, 80's dancehall and rastafari nyabinghi sounds, this is the book for you!

Great, rare find-buy now!
An accurate and in depth look at reggae from its colonial begginings, religious and political influence as well as its multiple pathways; from rock steady to ska to dub to dancehall and its influence on the punk and new wave movements. This book and Reggae Bloodlines are the only books you need on the subject.

My friend had this book back in high school sometime between 1987-91. We loved it. Of course as teenagers we read very little of it except the captions of the pictures.Fast forward over 25 years later and I decided to buy a used copy. It really is a fine introduction to Reggae with a lot of history that still holds up to modern scrutiny.Of course my older and wiser self no longer takes everything within these pages at face value (any news from Zimbabwe lately, hmmm?) but if you can identify and overlook the naive optimism and folksy hustle (BS) of some of the characters/opinions, you will find this book to be quite a gem.
