The Legion: Eagles of the Empire, Book 10

The Legion by Simon Scarrow
I have only recently discovered Cato and Macro, after a friend advised me to read "Under the Eagle" (Book 1)Since then I have found Scarrow's book very addictive and have now read all 10 books in the last 8 weeks! So glad I am retired!!His characters are superb, the stories are life like, with plenty of twists and turns. So far I think that The Legion is the best book of the series and we find the two friends struggling to deal with their new found promotions as well as keep their friendship secure.I am now waiting for the next instalment, which I find very frustrating as I am eager to find out what is going to happen to them. For newcomers, start at the very beginning of the series and follow how the two men's characters grow.Superb books, highly recommended

Back To Form For Scarrow
With some little plot twists (some that as hardened readers you will see coming, but are good all the same) the book starts with Macro landing at an Egyptian outpost and slaughtering the Roman garrison. Sorry, spoiler, but you 'know' what is going on here surely if you have followed Cato and Macro's chase of the rogue gladiator Ajax? From then on the story is pretty good and back on form - the relief for me is that the Julia character, beloved of Cato, is reduced to mentions. She just slayed the tension and the story in the previous installments - it's like Superman getting together with Lois Lane or finding out who Batman is: Cato and Macro don't need a love interest. The strange thing is Scarrow can write in some strong women characters but just failed with the attempt to write in a love interest and seems to have grasped that now.Back to form and a good page turner.

Great Read
This book and the whole series of books about Macro and Cato are both an exellent and exciting voyage into the lives of the Roman army as each book finishes you want to start the next one to find out how their adventures procedes. They are well written with a fine attention to detail that will keep you enthralled, would fully recomend them not only for men but also for women as my wife also likes them and has read the whole series and cannot wait for the next book in the series to be published. I purchased this and the series from Amazon.co.uk by receiving books and e- books.

Roman Legions at their best
It’s been a long time since I have read a story which has gripped me from start to finish.I love the descriptions and tactics of the Roman Cohorts including the description of the weapons and tools. The immersive reality with which I am transported into the legions along side Cato & Macro is spellbinding, I can not wait to start the next book. Thanks for a great story.Regards Rory
