Smart, Inspiring Book!
If I had to pick one favorite book of 2014 it would have to be Leanne Prain’s Strange Material: Storytelling through Textiles. It looks at textiles, including a few pieces of crochet, and how various artists have transformed them into narrative-based artworks. I believe that everyone and everything has a story. I believe that there is power in sharing those stories and in re-shaping those stories. This book does that in such a unique way for a niche topic. I love it. This is a smart book that is intended to inspire the reader to tell their own story through handmaking. I believe it succeeds in this goal.

Cherish this book
I bought this book on a whim and fell in love with it. It's engaging, funny, inspirational and well written. It took me longer to read than I usually take with a book because I kept checking the artists and their work on the Internet as I went on. My only regret is that I have the kindle version and I think this would be a better book to have in print. I guess I will have to buy another copy. If you love textiles, stories and ideas, you will enjoy this book.

I had to stop and ponder almost every line as Leanne Prain and all the artists featured have distilled many years of experience
This is an outstanding book absolutely crammed with relevance covering everything from discussion on textiles telling the stories of our individual lives and communities to inspirational 'prompts' for future ideas. I had to stop and ponder almost every line as Leanne Prain and all the artists featured have distilled many years of experience and thought in the interviews which form the core of the book and demonstrate wonderful textile art used for celebration, profound healing, challenging assumptions and not least the benefits of a having a good laugh!I shall be mining this book for gems of textile insight for a long time to come.

Good
This is a great book for 'the collection' - it wasn't 100% what i thought it was going to be though - its more of a collection of artists work with mini projects rather than a critical overview of narrative textiles (which i hoped it might be). I really dislike the inclusion of crafty projects in there - it cheapens the book - but the overview of artists is very useful.

Great ......got me thinking
This book is ideal if you feel lacking in inspiration or stuck in a rut creatively. It gets you thinking and asking questions. I liked the kindle version with web links. I didn't like the projects and felt this took up to much space a brief guide to inspiration. Methods and materials would have been better.
