I love it
I am using this stuff to modify different parts of some of my cheaper guitar pedals. On one pedal I use this on the metal stop button cap, the plastic knobs, and the ends of my gold L adaptors. I loved it so much that I took three more pedals off my rack for treatment. This time I applied this to the shell of the guitar pedal, leaving all the buttons and knobs in transparent plastic. This stuff looks great in both of these contrasting design applications. One thing I would like to note is that you really need to let it dry for a while, like overnight, before you really get to see the true final colors. So, when you put it on, I suggest you apply each color in splotchy high-contrast shapes, or else when it dries fully it might be far more subtle than you had hoped. Initially I used this like how most kits sugest, by layering one container at a time to fully cover the surface. That is not at all what this product is like. I have heard some say that there is a variation to the grain size but I don't see that. The consistency is like a very sandy pudding, and sometimes the glue in it can stick amazingly, whereas other times it will flake off. I think this is a situation where you may want to add some primer to this equation, as well as a sealer in the end. I thought maybe this was just glue with sand in it, because the packaging tells you nothing, but the particles can sometimes sparkle just a little (not where you painted it, but just in the dusty mess left behind), which makes me think it is metal dust in some sort of slightly fluffy glue, but it could just as easily be glass particle dust (man-made sand) in some sort of plaster. I think this does have real metal in it though. The packaging does not come with any warnings though, which you would usually get with real patinas that require a sealant. I don't know why anyone is acting like this is pricey, unless they have never done any sort of faux-finish before. If you apply water to this, you get a more unpredictable result where some areas will have a lower grain and some will flake off. You will need to let this sit overnight, come back and rub it with your hands to predict what is doomed to flake off later anyway, and paint more of this into those places it flaked off. But I will say it looks darn nice when it does flake off. You might want some flaking to happen. All this said, this stuff takes practice because nobody can tell you how to do that specific thing you need to do with this, and I would like the packaging to give more instructions and an indication of this is toxic or not. If it is not, then I would have liked seeing that label, as I will be actually touching these surfaces. I found the trhee containers to have a consitent and practical grain size. I got the best results by covering a whole area with the brown, then a smaller area inside that with the orange, and an even smaller area in the orange with the green. Leave the stuff looking ridiculously colorful, and I think when you check on it the next day you will be pleased with how well the tones fade together as they fully harden and have time to sit. I am curious if this stuff can be used in conjusction with other faux-rust processes, because I would love to add a real patina on top, but I have no idea if this even has real metal in it. I am very pleased with this purchase. My containers were not dried out, and it seems to be sealing back up to stay moist just fine.
