An inclusive story book
I liked this story a lot: it feels like everyone is included in the picnic and everyone is accepted. There are some good issues for children to think about: what makes a family? why do you think one person lives alone?I'm left wondering what inside the wrapping paper of all the birthday presents!

A starting place
The book is really a platform that allows you to talk to your child about different types of families. The story itself is a little dull but it serves a purpose in terms of opening chances to discuss how families are formed.

Great book
It is very good book including many races , sexual orientation, single parents and genders in the book. It is a little too long for my 2 year old but as he gets older he will understand. Ideal for all children to have an understanding of different family units as well as adoption. There should be more books like this reflecting different types of families.

Disappointing
As a single adopter I was looking for a book to help my 3yr old understand that it's ok for families to differ. As the previous reviewer said, the quality of the paper (and cover) is poor. Really not worth the cover price. Far more disappointing I found the story to be tedious and unimaginative, and the artwork isn't great either.Even with adlib there's no way it'll hold a young child's attention and I doubt an older child would find it interesting either.

Fab book!
Fabulous book, a great gift for any child, particularly for families who are a bit different.

nice story, shame about the paper
This is quite a nice story and introduces children to the idea of single-parent families, gay families, children who live with their grandparents etc. I got this for my son as I'm a single parent and I wanted him to grow up understanding that all families are different and he's not the only one without a father and given the lack of books about single parent families, this one is ok. It's a shame about the paper it's printed on, it's quite thin and can tear easily, so I'll have to make sure we're careful with this one.
