Modern Introduction to Classical Electrodynamics: Secession
J**S
A pity
I bought the book because it was recommended to be a more modern version of Landau and Lifschitz volumes on the classical theory of fields and electrodynamics of continuous. I skimmed through the book I feel the theory is covered quite well. However what I really miss is a substantial amount of problems ( nearly none), which in my view is essential for understanding the theory and thus, alas, makes the book useless for the undergraduate and beginning master students. In some sense the student is also misled because stated in the contents there are sections with solved problems, but the number is ridiculously low. So you need a separate problem book to practice ( put a problem book in your references as a minimum).I bought the book out of interest in the subject and for fun and to relearn the subject a bit after 35 years and bought the hard cover alas. I was raised with J.D. Jackson book on classical electrodynamics in the 1980's, and must confess that is still more than sufficient for all purposes.I think the lack of sufficient problems is a real pity as the book would probably deserve 4/5 stars.
