Hated Uprising, loved Ascension.
This book is better than it has the right to be.I pre-ordered this book when it was announced and was delivered when Pacific Rim: Uprising came out. I went to the movie and came out with very mixed feelings, mostly unfavorable. Because I didn't like the movie, I let this sit on my shelf for a while.I finally got around to reading it and boy am I glad I did, it tells a fantastic story that connects the future of the Pacific Rim world with the great GDT parts that I missed so much in Uprising. If you are a fan of the series, give it a shot. It's not great, but it's a fun ride. The writing style was also very fun to read, it felt like I was in a blockbuster movie myself. Give it a try! What's the worst that can happen? It's only $8.

because I freaking love the first one that I actually felt the drift ...
ok I gave a 4 for this book: 2 points for basically whatever starts with "pacific rim" in the title, because I freaking love the first one that I actually felt the drift in the theater (apparently not a whole lot of people would appreciate it nowadays), and another 2 points for this prequel.Overall, it's a well-written novel that adds more inputs and details to the history and background of two young jaeger pilots, or cadets - Jinghai and Viki, which is from China and Russia respectively. However, the 2nd pacific rim movie wasn't about these two pilots, at all. So there's disconnection there. It depicts the bonds between the two and also inserts an decent amount of time for a mission by Gipsy Avenger. It also shared a couple of epic fights involving Cherno Alpha, and other jaegers taht didn't get a lot of screenplays in the movie.I feel that if this were to make another film about Pacific Rim, it could be a 40 -60 minutes episode and that's it.One thing I hated, was the fact the story line was so messed up.. I understand the author was trying to describe two or sometimes three events in a chronic style, but the thing is that these events happened in multiple timeline, and putting them together would be a disaster for the readers if not handled well. When reading through the book, I'm forced to jump back to 2030 and forth to 2045, and sometimes 2010 to understand what's going on. It's confusing and breaking the stories apart.

Great story!
A great insight into some of the characters, giving especially a lot of depth into Nate Lambert and the cadets Jinhai and Vik which makes for their actions in the movie have more meaning! There’s some little inconsistencies and contradictions to movie canon, which is understandable given this is worked off of early script drafts - but overall it is a story that builds well and have some great character arcs!

Fascinating sci-fi world
I've not seen any movies or read other Pacific Rim books, and I thought the author set the scene wonderfully well with immersive descriptions for each place, each battle, each aspect of the post-kaiju Earth. There were equally clear backstories for male and female characters of different ages. These are woven together in subplots that are slowly revealed via flash-backs with not a few twists in the tale. All-in-all, a clever and thrilling story that makes me want to read more.

Disappointing to the extreme
Vapid, simplistic, boring. Story about teenagers with chips on their shoulders. Very predictable storyline. The only action is when they review how each Kaiju from the first movie was defeated. There is only one actual battle in the book, within the last 10 or so pages . It is a Jeager against humans with first-hand missle launchers who almost defeat the Jeager. This so called military organization let's new recruits talk back, not answer questions and walk all over the officers. Mako Mori is wasted and ineffectual. This book does nothing for the franchise, provides no insights, does not advance the narrative, it is a dead end. It will put you to sleep.. I was so afraid this was going to be the movie story but there is still hope . The movie novelization paperback is by a different , hopefully more experienced author. I would not recommend this book to any fan of the movie.

Not as good as most of Greg Keyes' books
I've read most of his books, the kingdom of thorn and bone series, the water born series, the land of the departed and it's sequel, etc and this one just didn't attach up as one of his best. I realize moist of my favorites are of a different genre than The ascension so make this explains it. I am always excited when be releases on of his books and can't wait to read it.

And enjoyable read. Much like a YA book, it still tells a pretty good story.

I enjoyed this- if you have watched Pacific Rim Uprising and are desperate to find out more then this is for you
I enjoyed this- if you have watched Pacific Rim Uprising and are desperate to find out more then this is for you. It is always tricky to write a book like this as you are constrained by what happened in the two films (it has to fit in without creating inconsistencies). This book does it well. It is well-written and true to the Pacific Rim genre. It explores some aspects in more detail than has been given in the films (e.g. more about Kaiju Worshippers and the character/backgrounds of Jin-Hai and Vic).
