im eternally grateful to the author for his monumental effort to bring the unabridged version of the Mahabharata to english readers the world over. This version is based on decades of research by scholars (BORI edition) who have painstakingly reviewed many scripts of the Mahabharata and removed all the later regional additions and add ons..Forget the politics and agenda driven versions, this is the REAL DEAL..P.S Be prepared to have your mind blown if you have read other regional versions ( like Villi Bharatham ) or believe whatever is shown in television serials on the epic is the truth.

This is a wonderful translation of the first volume of the epic. Nothing is lost, yet the version feels true and not clunky as sometimes happens. I would recommend this, though I have to say, I really wish the paper version would have been available..... I bought the rest of this translation in paperback.

This book is really a great one to read for passionate readers and those who are interested in our Hindu literature. I found some faults but the good side seems to overcome the fault. Another big advantage in this book is that it has given the meaning of words which are often confusing to understand. It has given detailed explanation of everything but sometimes failed to give some details that are crucial or was needed for a better understanding. For example when Bhisma brought the queens of Kashi for Vichitra vira and there it didn't mention of Amba who refused to marry Vichitra vira and wanted to marry Bhisma. But Bhisma refused and there were several important occurring that were crucial. Another one was about Draupadi's swayam vara where it failed to give some more details. But in some cases these details make the text boring but sometimes they are important. But these details have very little to do with the main story. So its not enough to say this book bad for not mentioning these details. So I want to state that this is an excellent book to buy but I would recommend to study a short version before buying this book. In other words it is excellent.

商品の説明に「based on the Critical Edition compiled at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.」とあるように、BORIのCritical Editionを底本にした英訳です。購入前に底本まで確認できる本はなかなか珍しいので、ありがたいです（たいてい、前書き/後書きを見ないと分からないことが多いです…探し方が悪いのかも知れませんが）。上村訳「原典訳マハーバーラタ」はこれと同じ本を元にしているのですが、膨大な翻訳であるためか、「○○章略」という具合にあちこち省略されている部分があります。BORIのCritical Edition（プーナ批判版）自体が、ローカル俗説または後世の挿入と思われる部分を取り除いたバージョンとされていると思うのですが、和訳が省略されているため、そもそも原本のCritical Editionになかったのか、和訳で省略されたのか、判断ができません。和訳されている部分は、信頼できる翻訳であるだけに、大変惜しいところです。和訳の省略部分を補完したいと考えて、英語の完訳を探したのですが、フルで出版されているものが見当たらず…（以下の英訳を検討したのですが、全巻がないため保留）https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/0226846636/https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/0814717446/そこで、全巻翻訳されている本書を購入しました。Kindle版なので、輸入を待つ必要なく買えるのが嬉しいところです。また、同翻訳者のハリヴァンシャが最近出版されました（やはりBORIのCritical Edition底本）。マハーバーラタの重要な補編が同一シリーズで読めることになります。http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B01L21VD4Wマハーバーラタの英訳を完訳で読むとすると、著作権フリーのK. Since October of 2013, I have ordered Volume 1 from 5 different booksellers. For some strange reason I never receivedany of them, all "lost in the mail". I had ordered and received Vol. 2-8, with no problem. So am absolutely thrilled to beable to finally give my husband Volume 1 of The Mahabharata.Thanks for shipping your books with a tracking # and the book was in pristine condition. It arrived finally on May 2nd.

I closed in on Bibek Debroy's Mahabharata as the edition I would read.The book is a very easy read and it's language fits today's English standards, not archaic English which many other Mahabharata translations use.About the book, well, I have no words to describe what it means to me. It is really mind blowing stuff.
