Good enclosure, power button is a double-edged sword
Got this as my dual-port hard drive dock finally called it quits. My assumption was that the flakiness I’d been seeing was due to it dying a slow death, so I just went for this single enclosure that was at a good price. This enclosure seems built well, and the assembly couldn’t be any easier for a 3.5” drive (no tools, secure mounting and cover).I wish the power cord was a little longer, but it is decent enough without any extra cord draped all over, I suppose. There is a power button on the back, which I’ve found to be both a good and bad thing (I have an external WD drive that simply turns on when you plug it in, so I have another reference): It’s nice in the fact that you only get power when you specifically want it to be applied, but after a short power outage it was a downside since my laptop was on but the drive never came back up without pressing the power button. I won’t ding the product because of this, as it could be seen as a feature, but I am used to things recovering on their own without intervention.Performance is rock solid and as fast as I can throw at it easily. I won’t benchmark an external drive, especially since the drive I put in it is a NAS/archive drive, but it’s handled 100-120 MB/s read/write steadily without issue; good enough for my purposes.

Orico External HDD enclosure
I purchased this case even after reading some of the negative reviews complaining about heat dissipation issues. I ended up drilling some 3/16" holes in both the top and bottom covers of the case to compensate for this issue, and it has made an immense difference from what I initially experienced with the heat problem. Maybe Orico should consider this option, but contacting tech support is hit or miss at best, and I never did get a response when I tried. Tech support needs improvement, as does the case. I figured it out, but not everyone has the mechanical skills or abilities to make such modifications on their own. Manufacturing defect aside, the case is sleek, small, and functional, and for this, I give it 4 stars out of 5.
