A fine field guide
With the vast diversity of insects on the planet to create a comprehensive field guide is always going to be an impossibility, but this book comes pretty close! Fairly typical dimensions in height/width, it's substantial in thickness, because it's packed with full colour photos of hundreds of insects, complete with descriptions of their habitat, distribution etc.If you've any interest in the vast diversity of insect life to be found in South Africa or are going on a "Bug" Game Safari then this book is worth it's weight.

DRM. Ridiculous, not advertised and the sample is misleading
This is a review for the KINDLE version of the Field Guide to Insects of South Africa. The Field Guide to Insects of South Africa (as a BOOK) is an excellent and valuable companion for any amateur entomologists traveling in Africa (I've got a paper copy). However, I bought a KINDLE version to reduce the weight in my suitcase when I next fly out - thinking I could review all the colour plates in my laptop. But Amazon have made it DRM - so I can't. It won't even open in Amazon's Kindle for PC 2! If Amazon won't release the Kindle Fire in the UK what is the point in them selling electronic books that require a colour display. Nowhere on the purchasing page does it mention DRM and this, sadly, results, for me, in the book no longer being a FIELD guide. This Kindle version is not worth the money. Additionally misleading, the SAMPLE played fine on my laptop.

but pretty useless in practice
A big book, but pretty useless in practice. It didn't help me identify anything. The images are too small and some are poor quality and I had to rely on the internet to identify what I'd photographed. A waste of money.

You will find almost any Southern African insect you come across in this guide
This is a great reference for finding out about the insects that you discover while in Southern Africa. Whether walking in the bush, finding one clinging to the wall of your tent, or flying through the open window of your vehicle, this is the source for information on insects! I have carried this guide, along with others on mammals, birds, spiders, bats and plants on multiple trips to Africa, and this reference has always been of great assistance in identifying insects while in Africa. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone with even a slight interest in the insects of Southern Africa.

Great field guide
I appreciate the fact that I do not have to carry my hardcopy around with me and everything I require to Identify these little creatures is now available on one device. I can also include notes with the Afrikaans names, sightings, dates or anything interesting I want to add. It was also less than half the price I paid for the hardcopy a couple of years ago :-)
