In and out on his own terms
My dog loves his Jeep. To my surprise, it really has become his comfortable place. He loves to get in for a drive; he even likes to just get in and lie down on the back seat if we're out working in the yard. The challenge is that he needs someone to lift him in or out, and it's really way too lifted for him to get in or out without help. I've used some boards and other ramps for his convenience, but they have definitely been too bulky to bring when we leave the house, and they're not the easiest to deploy either. There's another 2-part folding plastic ramp that we've used which is actually pretty good, but we keep that for the boat, plus it was still a little bulky. But this is a great solution. The stairs are more solid than I had expected and it accordions out really easily for quick deployment, and it's small enough to toss into the backseat footwell with no fuss. The steps are a little on the small-ish side, smaller than your normal household stairs, but that doesn't seem to be causing any issue. My dog has used enough ramps and stairs that he was really quick to use this for the first time. One minor issue is that at the top step, the bars extend out a bit to sit on a bumper or step, and don't have a cover on them. So, that leaves in my case a bit of a booby trap if my dog were to miss that top step and fall through. An easy enough solution was to cut a small piece of plywood (9"x22") to sit across the extended top exposed star bars so he doesn't fall through. Problem solved; I haven't decided whether or not I'll permanently attach the plywood with some conduit straps, but for now I don't think so.He still prefers being lifted in and out if we're going for a drive, but it's also obvious that he likes having the option to get in and out on his own terms. Works as well as I could have hoped and I think it's a litlte extra safety for him ... and me.
